I was perusing the Internet this morning, researching some iconic photographs, and stumbled upon this story. Some photos, accompanying story, and several follow-up stories. They capture the moment a train full of Nazi prisoners were found and freed by several American soldiers. Great reading on a Sunday morning. Additional annotated photos here.

Typing through blurry eyes....after reading the horror of man's inhumanity to man....and then reading about the humanity of our troops who came upon these unfortunate souls.

God bless every one of our present veterans in the name of these noble American emancipators who freed the Nazi prisoners that glorious day.

My dad was a WWII combat veteran, first in N. Africa, then on to storming the beach at Sicily, marching up through Italy, through hell, across the Rhine, into Germany, marching into Berlin half an hour after the cowardly Hitler and his girlfriend committed suicide. Daddy said he had seen the bodies at the concentration camps stacked several feet high, solid for an eighth of a mile. - I am still pissed at what that man wrought with his narcissism; and pissed at the narcissist that we must endure at this juncture.

Awesome!

Saw one of those last night. Good to see the whole story and the rest of the phots!

Prompted me to watch “It’s a Beautiful Life” last night on Netflix. That Italian Halocaust film with the little boy who was told they were in a contest to win a tank.

Thanks for posting - that was a great read!

Here's an interesting one I came across a while back that also has lots of related links.

“It’s a Beautiful Life”

Truly one of the best, most poignant movies I have EVER seen! The father of that little boy was brilliant, and if I'm not mistaken, won an Oscar for that role.

Another good one to watch if you can find it is "The Brest Fortress".

It's all in russian and german with subtitles, but it's one of the best little known WWII movies I've seen for awhile.

Oh, I did see it. Yes it was very good. Katyn is another really good movie, only this one tells a different story to the Soviet invasion of Poland.

Thanks for mentioning "It's a Beautiful Life".

I'd never even heard of it before. Just watched it. I thought the father would solve that kraut doctor's last riddle though. (Maybe he did and I missed it?

Am hoping to find Katyn soon as well.

Thinking about it, it looked to me like he realized the Nazi doctor was completely insane.
