Prediction: Notre Dame wins BCS title, and it'll echo through ages
Los Angeles Times ^ | BILL PLASCHKE

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The images will be vivid, history will be haunting, ghosts will be everywhere.

This is Knute Rockne versus Bear Bryant, Touchdown Jesus versus Dreamland Bar-B-Que, Four Horsemen versus Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Montana versus Joe Namath, and, of course, in the battle of the little guys, Rudy versus Nick.

It will be a football game bathed in a complicated mess of legend, religion and roughhousing, but most folks think Monday's BCS national championship heavyweight fight between Alabama and Notre Dame can be symbolized by a single disparity.

This is being billed as the possible greatest college football game in history. Hype or reality?

Also what are your snack foods for this game? I used coupons to score 6 FREE jumbo avocados last week and they have ripened much quicker than expected so now converting most of them into guacamole. Also I used coupons today to score a big bag of FREE Mission round tortilla chips to go with the guacamole. Just getting over a cold so no beer although I might sip on vodka.

Hype.

Saban will refuse to humiliate them. But it won’t be close.

The weird thing is that if I drive one block, turn right, keep driving straight, it would take me to the BCS game in about 40 minutes. Been raining on and off today so don’t know what the weather will be like at kickoff.

I don’t think you can have a top game in history unless there is some significant offense that shows up. So, hype.

Nice defense, though. Hope nobody gets hurt when immovable object meets immovable object.

Hats off to you on being a savvy shopper!

Alabama has both a great defense and a great offense. Notre Dame has a great defense and an average offense.

That says that ND will give up more points than does Alabama, and that means that ‘Bama will win.

However, Brian Kelly knows that preparation for just one game deciding it all is the place to create unheard of razzle-dazzle. If Kelly’s razzle-dazzle works, then ND could be in this game. A graduate of Cincinnati, Kelly’s last head coaching job, I do agree that Kelly is an offensive genius, and the one who might be just the guy to create the tricksiest trick-plays of this young century.

Alabama by 7.

Saban will do what it takes to win decisively.

OTOH, a humiliation might shut up their fan base for another couple of years, but it’s doubtful. hasn’t worked before.

Count on endless complaining about officiating should the Domers lose....

| "Alabama has both a great defense and a great offense. Notre Dame has a great defense and an average offense."

And that's the kicker - if (when) ND gets behind by 2 scores, they won't have the firepower to respond. Their best shot is if they can somehow punch Bama in the mouth early, then hang on (like Texas A&M did).

My bet: Alabama does the early punching and then wears down the ND defense in the third and fourth quarters. 31-16.

Hype, do to the month layoff BCS championships are never really good football. Both teams have had forever to over prepare, and one will have, and they’ll fall behind early and lose. I’m hoping ND pulls the win just because I’ve gotten sick of the fans of bad SEC teams excusing their team’s horribleness because some SEC teams are really good. SEC needs to lose a couple.

Thank the Lord for Bread and Circuses, or I would be depressed at the state of the world. The Empire will move on forever as long as we can be distracted by sports.

I am having a hard time caring, but I suppose I should.

I am more concerned about the absence of 9 mm ammo at my local gun store.

I wish I was a low-information voter so that I could enjoy the game.

Good point. The tide would be 14 point favorite if played in Tuscaloosa and a 4 point favorite if played at South Bend. Those homefield advantages are awesome !! Doesn’t matter, the Crimson Tide wins 29 to 20.

What these jokers on their high horses don’t understand is that some of cannot be immersed in that sh*t 24/7. Some of us need a distraction now and then from the weight of the destruction of the Republic.

The Notre Dame/Bama game will serve that function for me and many others tonight.

In a bowl game and regardless of conference, the odds are about 2:1 in favor of any team from the Southeast beating an opponent from somewhere else.

Yep, just like that. At BCS, Ohio State ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and I started with the Dandy Don "Turn out the lights . . ." When people talk about rabid fans here and there, they just don’t know what rabid is. I think it is because for so long all this state had that we could really be proud of was Alabama football.

Just watched a replay of that game the other day. The amount of talent on both sides of the ball with both teams was unbelievable.

And, a script writer could not have written the circumstances and moment of Vince Young's 4th down TD run in the final minute of the 4th quarter.
