The Antipsychotic Prescribed To Adam Lanza Has A Troubled History All Its Own
businessinsider ^

By now the whole country is fully embroiled in the Gun Control debate, spurred by the grisly murder of 27 people, mostly kids, at the Sandy Hook Elementary school last Friday.

Guns might not be the only problem though. New York Magazine wrote a piece about shooter Adam Lanza's supposed "aspergers" syndrome as a "red herring" meant to distract from the real problem (guns, of course, the subject goes without mentioning).

Inside the piece though they report Adam Lanza's uncle said the boy was prescribed Fanapt, a controversial anti-psychotic medicine. Fanapt was the subject of a Bloomberg report when it passed regulators, after previously getting the "nonapproval" stamp. Why wasn't it approved, you might ask?

I thought they said there was no evidence of him being on drugs, including prescription drugs.

A few years ago I went into a massive depression. I was irrational and easily upset.

I started seriously thinking about committing suicide. Yes, I thought about my family, but I’d convinced myself that they’d be much better off without me.

I started to plan it. The only time that I had control over my depression was when I was planning my death.

This went on for about two weeks.

One night, I was looking up some info on the internet for my son and it hit me - this wasn’t me. This wasn’t WHO I’ve always been. This isn’t how I thought or had anything to do with my general attitude toward life.

About two months prior, I’d been prescribed Synthroid for an underactive thyroid. I’d noticed that it was causing me anxiety, but not much else.

That was the only thing that had changed recently, so I looked up “synthroid side effects”.

“Suicide, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts...”

Well, holy crap.

I stopped taking the medications and within 3 days the desire to kill myself went away.

For anyone who’s never seriously been suicidal, let me tell you, this is not an emotional decision. It’s scary logical, rational even. Your life is dirt. You are dirt. Your very existence on this earth is harming the ones you love. There is no point in continuing to pollute the earth with your inglorious self. It is a complete absence of hope or any sense of self-worth.

And the more you accept that you’ve got to go, the lighter the depression. You don’t get help because you really believe that you’ve got the answer.

I pushed aside the depression and need to die for the three days that it took to get the drug out of my system.

But seriously - had it not hit me how entirely out of character this really was for me, I don’t know if I’d have made it.

The stupid part of all of this? I had been mentally FINE until I was given this drug. Every woman in my family who’s ever been given Synthroid had a bad reaction. I knew this, but nobody had ever told me what it was. AFTER this crap, it all came out. The horror stories that I’ve heard from my little old aunts...

Moral of the story: If you find yourself suddenly in a very dark place, first examine your environment.

One of the best descriptions of suicidal depression I’ve ever read. In such a state, suicide seems reasonable and just; survival seems selfish and parasitic.

I would point out that depression is very common in people who have an under-active thyroid, Marie.

Good post. I have a relative diagnosed bipolar, but under control. She got Shingles and the doctor prescribed her Elavil, an older antidepressant also used for pain. She is an older individual and I had taken her to one of her appointments when he wrote the prescription. I said “Excuse me, but with her bipolar I really don't think this is a good choice.” The doctor knew her medical background and said “Oh it's such a small dose it won't hurt.”

Four months later she was manic, had no sense of reality and wanted to die. She started giving away things, not making sense and becoming more and more paranoid. Thank God she wasn't a violent young person but a generally likable elderly one. Took almost a year to get her back on track.

Drip, Drip comes out the information about Adam Lanza, misinformation after misinformation, suddenly a controversial anti-psychotic drug Fanapt comes into the picture. Supposedly stating Asperger’s Syndrome would have a negative connotation that would make Americans scream why was not something done. Mental Illness, psychotic wait the Bun Laws have provisions to check for the diagnosis of psychiatric problems that are a threat to society.

The media has fallen on this story as more information drips out day by day, it will become apparent it was not the Gun that was at falt it was the person with a psychotic problem, sounds like Adam lanza researched a few other shootings - Columbine, Aurora, CO (notice the hard drive demolished). Yet the media stated there was massive amounts of information available with the computers, We have been here before in CO, when the powers to be were notified in advance about the potential problem. what about Ft. Hood warning signs.

There is a problem does not anybody else see a pattern Fast and Furious, Ft. Hood, Arizona, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut. Notice everywhere a conservative area (except Connecticut but conservative town Newtown), whereby gun laws are in place. Yet the federal government seems to be involved in some shape or form. reduction of funding for schools to deal with potential violence. Lets follow the footprint - leads back to DC.

But also the media reporting everything to a certain extant, each time the issue becomes more violent and more innocents die. What will it be next, high school, - check, college - check, elementary school - check, military base - check, political gathering - check, movie theater - check and where will the next hit be. It will be someplace high profile and will be massive amounts of casualities. Where, when and whom is the next target? The media does not want to report the issue of what happened in Bath, MI. But that killing field was months in the work, before it was accomplished, ye maximize casualities not achieved.

Not trying to be morbid, but something will happen that will top the other issues that recently happened. The criminals have decided to make war on America, and the corruptocrats in DC will cater to the criminals to ensure chaos reigns supreme. Van Jones?

If you think you might need help for an underactive thyroid, see if you can get Armour Thyroid or one of the similar natural thyroid replacements.

There’s too much bad reporting comming from agenda driven msm. However sources like the New Yorker may have some value to them. For all we know this unfortunate soul may have been influenced by the Mayan thing. Hope that his autopsy is honestly reported and if the kid was on anything it comes out.

I feel so sorry for Nancy and Adam Lanza. The perfect patsies dragged through the mud even after death by true evil and their MSM accomplices.

This is no uncle (unless drinking buddy = uncle) and there is no mention of Fanapt in this article http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/nancy-lanza-feared-son-adam-worse-article-1.1221505 linked to by BS Insider.

And that's the trouble with so many meds— they work in some people and do the opposite in others.

Take Ritalin— a Stimulant that works to help some people calm down and concentrate, others not so much...

There are so many antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, benzodiazepenes, etc out there that doctors and even nurse practitioners prescribe like candy and many times they have no idea what they will do. Some they will help greatly. Others they won't and doctors rely on the sick person or family member to monitor themselves or their loved one. And then there's always “give it a little more time, it will work.” What happens in that “little more time”? Most antidepressants say you need to wait a month for them to work, in the meantime...

IF you believe you have an underactive thyroid, you can see if you can get your doctor to prescribe Armour THyroid extract or a similar drug (made from natural sources).

Other things which positively affect brain functioning are fish oil/cod liver oil, coconut oil, and other saturated fats, even butter.

There is a book, "Beyond Prozac," which discusses some of these substances and their use in fighting depression. Not panaceas, but things which may bring improvements.

The author also discusses the use of antidepressants such as Prozac.

Some years ago I was depressed enough that I considered going to an MD and getting a prescription for Prozac or similar. Fortunately a friend urged me to consider that book and taking natural supplemtns, which helped.

I'm also in a long-term relationship and have 6 cats, all of which keep me saner than otherwise.

Best wishes to everybody, and as much as possible, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Synthroid is a simple thyroid hormone replacement pill. Low thyroid can lead to depression, and boosting thyroid levels commonly relieves that.

I’d challenge you to provide any link that suggests suicide or suicidal impulses are a side effect of Synthroid.

http://www.drugcite.com/?q=SYNTHROID

suicidal and self-injurious behaviors (1.03% or 1 out of every 100 people taking it)

As I understand the problem; Synthroid only contains T-4. T-4 is converted into the liver into T-3. Some people may have trouble with this, leaving them with a T-3 deficiency.
