That’s very true and even at that endocrinologists aren’t necessarily infallible either. The best ones go as much by how you feel as by test results, once you’ve been working well together.
LOL you know our stuff. I see my endo every six months now. His first question is ALWAYS what meds have you taken and his second question is, “how do you feel”. My thyroid still cycles from high to low, but the swings aren’t as extreme. I honestly believe that had I not gone to him I would not be here. I was having thyroid storms and my regular doctor diagnosed me as emotional.
I don’t trust regular doctors with much.
I don’t trust regular doctors with much—and I’m glad you’re still here.
You are quite right that people are different and their diseases are different. Sometimes patients can have idiosyncratic reactions to medications. But your provider should inform the FDA and the manufacturer of Synthroid, because these reactions are not listed and they should be.
I wish I could go back and rewrite my story while omitting the name of the drug that caused the reaction.
The entire reason I shared such a painful, personal story on an open forum was that there was an off chance that some other person may come across it while they’re going through that same hell. Maybe, instead of leaving a loving note for their family and taking that final, horrible step, my story would be enough to make them stop and think for just a bit. Maybe they’d remember that they’d been prescribed a new medication and they’d get the help they need.
But this has turned into stupidity. People think that I’m attacking Synthroid and I’m not. My whole point was that medications can alter a person’s brain function in horrible ways.
When you’re hopeless, sometimes dangling a tiny piece of hope, one possible answer, in front of a person’s face gives them *something* to cling to.
When suicides began to be linked to Prozac, the FDA and the drug manufacturer dismissed these reports. Their attitude was that ‘depressed people sometimes commit suicide.’ It took years for anyone to admit the link and many lives were lost in the process.
Now it’s finally being acknowledged that a common asthma medication and Chantix can cause suicidal thoughts and attempts. How many more reactions are being ignored?
The website that saved my life was a government reporting website. (It was several years ago, so no, I don’t know exactly which website I used. But it was a gov’t website.) Lurker dismisses these reports, but that night all I had to see was that I wasn’t the only one. I read the case histories of other women who’d gone through exactly what I was going through and I didn’t die.
I really wish that people on this thread would get the larger message. Medications can screw up your brain chemistry and/or hormones. That can alter your thinking. If you’re on the ledge, don’t jump until you’ve GONE TO YOUR DOCTOR and had your medications changed or discontinued.
Everyone here who’s turned this into a Synthroid issue is missing the point.
And now I regret sharing it.
Please don’t regret sharing it. Your post has helped.
My point, Marie, is that you and your physician have a moral responsibility to write about your experience. Inform Abbott. Inform the FDA in Silver Spring, Maryland. It is only when outlying data like this is accumulated that providers can keep an eye out for anomalous drug reactions. You may be helping others avoid death.
I am not contesting what you say. I've had idiosyncratic drug reactions myself, though not to Synthroid and not anything serious, thank God. We're all different.
Thank you for your basic message.
It's only a matter of time until solid proof surfaces. There is almost always a psych drug connection in these cases.
I would point out to you, FrogMom, that Marie’s depression started only AFTER taking Synthroid, and her depression ended when she STOPPED taking Synthroid. No medical degree needed to figure that one out.
Marie, thank you for sharing your story. Both my husband and I are on Synthroid. If either of us start to fall into depression, Synthroid will be one piece of the puzzle we may have missed.
I am glad you are here today.
Too true. The autopsy report should provide the info we’re looking for. It takes awhile to process the tests required.
