Forbidden Planet.
Wow. TOUGH call. Just gonna go with my first thought that stuck with me. SO many good ones. I’m going with “Alien”.
Serenity
Empire Strikes Back
Jurassic Park
That is a great one (Forbidden Planet)
Classic Sci-Fi
War of the Worlds (NOT the crapola version with Tom Cruise)
When Worlds Collide
2001: A Space Odyssey
Modern Sci-Fi
Star Wars Ep. IV
Star Trek IV
Star Trek 2010
I just gotta add, “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “The Time Machine” (the originals)
Bladerunner
Alien
.
.
.
The Thing From Another World (1951)
Forbidden Planet
Metropolis (the restored copy as seen on TCM)
I thought I was the only one who was going to say “Forbidden Planet” but apparently there are a lot of us. Also had the hottest girl.
Invaders from Mars. (the original one)
The first and second Star Wars movies. I have no idea what episode they were.
.
.
.
Everything GODZILLA!!!!
THEM!
Hard to say but the following come to mind:
War of the Worlds - 1953 version
Independence Day
Alien
I also like The Thing with Kurt Russell and loved the new Battleship movie; I thought that was much better than I thought it was going to be.
I developed a fascination watching the old B&W sci-fi movies that came on after the news on Friday night. Anything that had to do with flying saucers or aliens and I was glued to the television set. We’d pop some popcorn and fix some koolaid or cokes and sit down to watch it and make a night of it. If lucky I would be able to see 2 “monster” movies until I fell asleep around 2:00 in the morning. Those were good times.
Dark Star
Blade Runner.
Modern sci-fi I would say Bladerunner, The Fifth Element, Star Wars and Star Trek obviously. Seremity is there for the very recent sci-fi and I am drawing blank thoughts on very recent sci-fi.
I’ll leave the classics to othere, I have my favorites and the top of the list is of course The Time machine. The George pal version, not the ones after it though arguably the latest one was a keeper.
Brazil
12 Monkeys
Dark City
There was a Gene Autry serial with the “Thunder Riders” who were actually spacemen. Of course the special effects were not that great, for instance they would drop little bombs out of a Piper Cub etc. Instead of having lasers.
The stories were very watchable tho.
I watched this on pay per view a couple of weeks ago, I had also seen it in the theaters when it came out.
However, I enjoyed it so much on ppv that I watched this movie four times during the period I had it.
Brilliant movie by Mr. Scott. I love it. I hope he considers doing the Alien series again. Normally I am totally opposed to remakes, but if he did them, I would be eager to see it.
Bladerunner, Dune and Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan
BTW, I loved Brazil, and 12 Monkeys.
I don’t think I know Dark City.
Serenity number one followed by Empire Strikes Back. Also, do monster movies count (it seems that’s more of what Sci Fi channel shows now). If they do then Dog Soldiers (a low budget film with a squad of British Soldiers fighting werewolves in the Scottish Moors) rounds out the list.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Serenity, (also best conservative movie ever).
The Fifth Element because I love Bruce Willis’ snarkiness.
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, because I love all classic Star Trek and this was the best of the Trek movies.
The Matrix
Aliens
Nevin’s Ringworld series, Laumer’s Retief series and Lewis’s Silent Planet series.
Hollywood did a great job on those films!
Who’d think there was anyone in that town with wit and competence to bring them to the screen and make a fortune!
And for anyone who was ever a ten year old boy, here’s the greatest sci fi movie you ever saw:http://archive.org/details/phantom_empire_chapter_1
...Gene Autry, an advanced underground civilization from before Atlantis, and the Junior Thunder Riders!

(not in any particular order)
The First Star Wars (A New Hope)
Starship Troopers
Robocop
The Time Machine (the original)
Spiderman
The Terminator (the first)
The Matrix (first)
Logan’s Run
Soylent Green
Galaxy Quest (my guilty pleasure)
Stargate
There are a number on others’ lists. I did not see these mentioned so far :)
It's a sci-fi film noir where nothing is what it appears to be, memory is unreliable, and no one knows what they think they know.
Ha! Linked to it above.
Great fun.
Them!(1954)
Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers(1956)
Gorgo(1961)
Now, bomb, consider this next question, very carefully. What is your one purpose in life?
Original versions of Invaders from Mars and invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Original versions of Invaders from Mars and invasion of the Body Snatchers.
The Blob. Blade Runner.
I have no idea why people list bladerunner. Saw original, in 82 snoozer, then the directors cut came out, went to hollywood to watch that, because certainly it had to be better.... Ummmmm Nope. The only thing I can think of is that there is another movie out there called bladerunner that is this classic tale.... I just keep seeing the bad one.
The Purple People Eater?
“The Brain from Planet Arous” (1958)!
Well, not really. But it is a fun flick. I love just about any and every 1950s-vintage sci-fi movie.
Blade Runner - easily the best
Logan’s Run - begs for a QUALITY remake, but great anyway
Empire Strikes Back - formed the lives of a generation
2001
The even numbered Star Treks
Blade Runner
Alien
I was going to say "Idiocracy", but I suddenly realized that it is a documentary and not a true syfi film!
Brazil is one of my favorite movies of all time but I don’t know if you can cal it sci fi.
