"Their failure is probably conclusive; it is unlikely that they will again be able to muster a strength relatively as great as that which has just been dispersed." It's interesting that the typically cautious Hanson Baldwin correctly calls Guadalcanal today, while the Japanese are still planning the next attack that they will never launch, for which they will substitute a complete withdrawal. Today, they are even planning on giving Guadalcanal its own army, the 17th Army, which had been split around the region.
