I’d say that preppers biggest mistake is in planning to live apart from the community instead of rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to maintain the community.

Where I am at in a rural area, water will never be a problem.

Not sure what they mean by beans and rice mentality but that is two of the things I have just begun to stockpile, along with sugar, salt, spam and a lot of spices.

I like guns and ammo, I have more ammo than I will ever need no matter what. I have no intention of shooting anyone who is not an immediate threat to my life. I do realize that hunting will be a very ineffective way to provide food not very long after a catastrophe.

Actually I don’t foresee any time when food and necessities are completely unobtainable. Just that they may be very expensive and I may not have much of an income.

7) The first time they (try to) use their survival gear is when they need it to survive.

I practice regularly with (ie. use) my gear & rotate supplies routinely. Got a fancy fire starter flint and steel? Have you ever tried to use it? Ever fished with that gear? Ever sharpened a knife with the stone? Ever cooked in that pan? Set up that tent in the dark, in a wind? Ever actually dug with that folding shovel? Ever prepared a meal with that big honking ridiculous Rambo survival knife? (ha, now go get a normal sized one before you hurt yourself!) Ever prepared kindling with that hatchet? Do you now have work gloves in your survival kit - 'cause you're going to be using your hands a lot more and getting blisters... etc. etc.

I think the biggest mistake a prepper can make is letting anybody know that they are preppers.

7. Voting Democrat (Yes.., they're out there.)
8. Voting RINO (I've made this mistake.)
9. Ignoring your relationship with God. (Father, grant me

7. Openly talking about prepping.

8. Leaving a huge paper trail in the form of credit card transactions and the like. If you don't think that big sis is tracking folks that buy MREs by the gross, you are not paranoid enough to be a prepper.

In re: #6... some folks are a threat now. They have to be dealt with if there is an emergency or not. ;)

6. Not Understanding that People will become a Threat During a SHTF Crisis

Im sure some liberals will be aking this question:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRGd0gD0QNE

Why can’t we be friends?

I seen you ‘round for a long long time
I really ‘membered you when you drink my wine

Why can’t we be friends?
Why can’t we be friends?

I bring my money to the welfare line
I see you standing in it every time

Why can’t we be friends?

The color of your skin don’t matter to me
As long as we can live in harmony

Why can’t we be friends?

I’d kinda like to be the President
so I can show you how your money’s spent

Why can’t we be friends?

Why can’t we be friends?

I know you’re working for the CIA
they wouldn’t have you in the Mafia

Why can’t we be friends?
Why can’t we be friends?

4. The Rice & Beans Mentality

Personally, I prefer barley, corn, potatoes, or pasta over rice. If I eat rice I usually can't tell that I've eaten. And for "beans", expand it to include other legumes. Lentil and barley soup is pretty good, especially with some beef and diced tomatoes in it.

The need for organization, preferably before the SHTF.

The Team is always superior to the individual.

I think Cody Lundin’s “When All Hell Breaks Loose” makes a few good points:

-The most important survival tool you have is your mind.
-Panic is the enemy, stay calm and your odds of survival are higher with nothing but the clothes on your back than someone freaking out with $100K worth of food and ammo.
-Know your neighbors and plan together, damn few singltons can really survive alone, it’s not impossible but it’s not just buying stuff and going camping once a year to rotate your stuff. This doesn’t mean your neighbors or anyone else should know the details of your plans, but a group of people looking out for each other is going to survive longer and better than Mad Max, unless you have SEAL level skills.

The basics are, IMHO:
-core body temperature
-hydration
-sanitation (the most overlooked and potentially the deadliest; my guess is a LOT more people are going to die of sanitation related issues than killed by roving criminal gangs),
-Sanitation
-communication

I live directly on an earthquake fault; my dad survived the 1906. It ain’t nothing but common sense. Far and away the biggest issue is water, hard to store and you die without it.

I would suggest a bug out place that is very difficult to find, a place that regular people would not try to get to, this may be a hunters blind on the side of a rock face, a small island on a rural lake, almost any swampland. One of the ideas I like was from a scene of the movie “Red” where a derelick junk car was used to hide a stairwell to a bunker.

With the expanded use of drones from what may be not so friendly forces research into concealed coverings should be done, especially thermal scanning. FLIR can be defeated by very good thick insulation like several layers of blueboard insulfoam with fiberglass batting sandwiched between.

Any heat source like for cooking needs to be carefully set up so as to diffuse away from the campsite or drawn into an underground muffler so to speak such as a steel barrel so it will cool off. Heat will give you away.

IMHO, I think finding “Like minded” people in your community is a catch 22 situation.
Breaking the ice with a neighbor means revealing you’re a prepper. If your neighbor reveals that they are a prepper, then you have just discovered that they can’t keep their mouth shut.
My family, friends and neighbors have absolutely no idea of what I do or have, other than knowing that I used to have a few loud guns … before I lost them in that tragic boating accident!
