Confused about slugs - vanity

Posted on 11/08/2012 8:39:04 PM PST by Westchester

I have a Mossberg 535 with the standard smooth barrel that comes with the purchase of the gun. What slugs do I buy for it? Several sources say a smooth barrel is just fine for rifled slugs, while others seem to indicate I would need to buy a different barrel.

Thank you.

The slugs are rifled so your barrel doesn’t need to be.

you can shoot slugs in a smoothbore shotgun, the only thing that i ever heard of being rifled in a shotgun is the choke. by definition all shotguns are smoothbore, i think.
why would you shoot slugs? better buckshot or turkey shot for something up close.

Rifled barrels are available for shotguns. The recommended rounds use a sabot to prevent fouling and also allow smaller aero shaped bullets.

I never cease to be amazed at the variety of shotguns rounds available.

Consider German-made Brenneke slugs. These are wadcutter-shaped with a sharp shoulder and integral rifling. When they were tested by the Alaska Dept of Fish and Feathers in the 1980’s they reliably punched a .60 caliber hole in every Brown Bear skull they fired at. If they’ll take out a Brown Bear imagine how well they will work on obamazombies.

Alternatively you could use the Centurion load available from vendors like Cheaper Than Dirt or Sportsman’s Guide. These combine 6 x .30 caliber buckshot balls with a single .60 caliber ball. They are devastating on target.

Don’t pussyfoot around - use the most destructive load you can get.

You are incorrect.

My Mossberg 500 came with two barrels, one smooth, one rifled.

Rifled slugs are for smooth bore guns but they do not spin in the barrel. they may have no reason at all but I have read they help the slug go through a choked barrel.
