Spooky Quantum Entanglement Gets Extra 'Twist'

Now physicists at the University of Vienna in Austria have "virtually intertwined" or entangled two particles spinning faster than ever in opposite directions. Entanglement occurs when two particles remain connected so that actions performed on one affect the other, despite the distance between them. (Einstein referred to this eerie connection as "spooky action at a distance.")

In the new study, Anton Fickler and his colleagues entangled two photons that had a high orbital angular momentum, a property that measures the twisting of a wave of light. In quantum physics, particles such as photons can behave as particles and waves.

Such entanglement experiments have been carried out for decades. In this case, though, the researchers did something a bit different. They created entangled photons and gave them lots of angular momentum, more than in any experiment before.

To create entangled photons, Fickler and his team sent a laser through a beam splitter, dividing the laser beam into two. Two photons were sent down separate optical fibers and their waves were twisted, and twisted, and twisted some more, ramping up their angular momentum — imagine a wave shaped like a spiral, spinning faster and faster.

Eventually, there was enough angular momentum in the photons that their quantum numbers — the units their momentum is measured in — differed by a factor of 600, a higher value than any seen previously. The photons spinning rapidly in opposite directions, meanwhile, were still entangled.

Just as importantly, the experiment shows that the only barrier to applying certain kinds of quantum effects is technical — there is no physical reason that one shouldn't be able to see quantum phenomena at high enough energies that they would bleed into the visible world...

What does that mean?

I am not sure I understand it, but it sounds freaking cool. To be able to manipulate photons like that.

I read the headline as “Quantum Entitlement” and was wondering where I sign up to get mine.

I don’t know but quantum entanglement has interesting potential for things like computing and possibly long distance communications.

Right now, observing quantum effects is very technically difficult. Raising the energy of those events makes detection, and therefore usefullness much easier.

At least I think that's what they said in culinary school.

Your left hand doesn’t know what your hand is doing but does exactly the same action.

heisenberg uncertainty principle?

The question: are you changing the properties of the photon by increasing its energy thereby interfering with or changing the experiment.

It almost sounds like a background noise issue that interferes with detection? Increasing the energy or “signal” improves detection. Much like amplification.

the only thing we really know for sure is there is a cat in a box somewhere that is either dead or alive. All else is just conjecture.

Until you look at it. Then it becomes a box of donuts. With sprinkles. Ummmmmmmmmm, donuts with sprinkles. Argggggggg.

My understanding is that adding energy (angular, in this case) to the photon makes it easier to see the state than otherwise would be possible.

My understanding is limited, in that particular area, since we barely covered it. I paid more attention to sauces, stocks, and breads during culinary school. ;)

“Until you look at it.”

You are quantumly correct. It would not have intertwined if they hadn’t observed it.

I think it simply relates to one of the sentences just above it:

“This shows that entanglement effects can be seen at high energies, meaning closer to the macroscopic world we all know and interact with.”

Therefore suggesting that theoretically at least (and far beyond our current capability) it should be possible to do something like this so that it would be visible to the naked eye.

Remember, quantum physics says that the PAST does NOT exist, UNTIL it is created by the PRESENT, and the PRESENT does NOT exist UNTIL it is created by the FUTURE

Okay! How does the concept of Time, in quantum physics, actually work? Well, first of all, we need to understand that there are such things as, what is called, a quantum WAVE FUNCTION, commonly known as a QUIFF, OR, more accurately, a Quiff Wave. Now, a Quiff Wave is actually a quantum wave of PROBABILITY... MEANING that within any quantum wave of probability IS...ALL POSSIBLE REALITIES!!! In other words, ANY possible reality, THAT COULD BE, is present in a quiff wave.

Now, one additional principle of quantum physics, needs to be injected here, at this point. And that is the principle of OBSERVATION. What this means is that something does NOT EXIST, UNTIL it is OBSERVED. In scientific terms, when the experiment is performed, AND the results of the experiment are observed (by whatever means, be it the meters, the equipment, or the person themselves, who is conducting the test) - WHEN the OBSERVATION takes place, THEN, and only THEN, does the RESULT come into EXISTENCE. In other words, quantum physics says that a particular, specific, individual REALITY...did NOT EXIST, until it was observed. PRIOR to being observed, and coming into existence, at THAT time, it ONLY was a reality in PROBABILITY!!! And ALL realities exist in PROBABILITY ONLY, until such time as ONE of those realities is OBSERVED (or SELECTED). THEN, by the act of observation, that ONE reality comes into actual EXISTENCE. And that is what is known as “popping” a quiff wave, or bringing a singular reality INTO EXISTENCE (which can also be called CREATION).

Now, to get back to the aspect of Time. What we actually have, in quantum physics, is two quiff waves, of probability (Remember?)...one quiff wave is coming from the PAST, and the other quiff wave is coming from the FUTURE. AND, if you remember, contained within each quiff wave IS ALL POSSIBLE REALITIES. SO, if we, or whoever, CHOOSE to OBSERVE those quiff waves, from the PAST and the FUTURE, we THEN “pop” those quiff waves, BRINGING INTO THE PRESENT, WHATEVER REALITY it is, that we have chosen to observe IN EACH ONE of those quiff waves.
In other words, the PRESENT then comes into EXISTENCE, and the present is composed of two parts: the individual, specific REALITY, from the PAST, that was chosen, AND, the individual, specific REALITY, from the FUTURE, that was also chosen. SO, the PAST, AND the FUTURE, constitute (or create) the PRESENT!
