Tipping is not a right thing to do.

Tipping is a gracious thing to do.

It is not meritorious.

The wage is meritorious.

A server can work in return for his wages.

His public position might give him more access to gratuity, but they should not be confused with his wages.

I don’t mind giving a gratuity to the chef or the saucier, and leaving the server without if he expects the tip as a wage.

My comments were directed at the “no tipping” sentiment - which I find as morally repugnant as begging.

When I waited talbles, I refused to add the “automatic tips” for larger parties, because I almost always did much better when I left it to the customer - also, I didn’t think it was right to add the automatic to large parties.

I was burned only once - a guy left $35 for $100 service (I could explain why it was that level of service, but that’s not the point here). It made my manager angry enough that he was going to chase the guy down and demand a better tip. I wouldn’t let him do it.

Some ladies from Denmark stayed at the resort where I worked - the rest of the staff refused to serve them because they left “European” tips (1 or 2 dollars for 80 to 100 dollar meals). I went to my manager and asked him to always seat them in my section - I didn’t think they should be treated poorly for not understanding the tipping custom - and they received my best, just like my other tipping customers.

I will now accept your apology for the things you said in ignorance about me.

Three so you wouldn't miss it.
I have obviously upset you. It was one of the things in the last forty that made me happy. Seeing you have a OH Sh*t attack on this forum would compare to Romney winning tonight. I can visualize the spit flying from your mouth as you mouth the words to your post. I love a good argument, I just wish you would keep up your end rather than resorting to calling me names and flying off the handle.
By the way, I tip great. I don't give things to people who don't deserve it. GET A BETTER JOB OR QUIT COMPLAINING.

“Unless the service is horrible — as in willfully spiteful or something — you should always leave a tip. 15% is the norm and you add or subtract depending on the quality of service. Not leaving a tip should be reserved for when you want to make a major statement to the waiter. Basically it says “If I were your manager I would fire you”. It should be very rare.”

Exactly my philosophy. And, I don’t take out my displeasure with the restaurant (cold, bad food, etc.) on them. That, I take up with the owner/manager.

I will not apologize to you. You were defending the service industry as a whole and not yourself. I assumed you were the one who spit in peoples food since you encouraged it in your previous post.

No server works for wages. The nominal wage only exists to cover the taxes on his tips. No one pretends that a server can live on his wage, which is well below minimum wage. Thankfully most people in our society understand this.

>> The worst service I’ve ever gotten was at a place where they included an 18% gratuity

Bingo! When I was a kid, trips to the Bahamas used to be great. After independence, they instituted a mandatory 15% tip and the service went to hell.

There’s a reason to have the tip be separate from the bill - all but the dimmest of waitstaff finally figure out that they work for the customer, not the restaurant.

I love giving >20% tips, but I’ll stiff ‘em in a New York minute if the service is bad.

How fascinating that you do not cast upon the single fathers similar derision.

"How fascinating that you do not cast upon the single fathers similar derision."

Au contraire, Mon Ami.

I have zero use for men who father babies, and walk away, also.

What is a "Single Father"? One who takes RESPONSIBITY for the up-bringing of a child he fathered? Is that a "Single Father"? Or are you talking about Divorced men with Custody, Widowers, or what?

Call them by their actual STATUS, NOT some cutesy/all-encompassing Politically Correct phrase.

The PROBLEM we have is a lack of responsibility, and playing the "victim" card by those whose lifestyles should result in THEIR paying their own way....NOT relying on others to pay for their circumstance.

You made your pointed remarks to ME. And you were dead wrong! You won’t apologize....hmmmmm, that speaks volumes, right there.

Furthermore, don’t twist what I said - you are a liar - I DID NOT encourage spitting in someone’s food, I warned another jerk that it might happen to him, with his attitude.

BTW - I don’t buy your line of crap that you’re an excellent tipper.

I guess I mistook your friendly advice as an attack on someone expressing their views.
BTW Don’t take this as an apology because I could care less what line of crap you buy.

No server works for wages.

Your assertion he doesn’t work for any pay. Not mine.

I tip 15%. But I see the tip as “the last word.” There were a few times I didn’t leave a tip because the waitress was so over-the-top rude. For example, one waitress got my order wrong, and when I politely asked for the correct order, she became defensive and told me off. And then she looked pleased with herself for telling me off. As soon as she walked away, I looked at our whole table filled with people and said, “No tip.” She did not receive a dime - her fault, not mine. She might’ve been pleased with herself for the moment, but I got the last word. ;-)

Usually, however, the server isn’t rude, and the customer should leave a tip. A server should have to be over-the-top rude, as I described above, for a customer not to leave a tip.

Well, you have absolutely confirmed yourself as a true jerk. You were absolutely wrong in your assunptions about me, your assumptions were ugly and spiteful - and YET, you can’t bring your arrogant, nasty self to apologize for what you said.

You are a petty soul, nothing “Gran” about you.

I will not stoop to your level of name calling. Ugly, spiteful, liar, arrogant nasty?
Have fun stewing in your own hate, just because someone didn't agree with you and kiss your a**. It seems I got under your skin. Mission accomplished.
Good buy.

The fact? No. Your opinion? Yep. The opinion of a holier than thou moral arbitor...reminds me of a certain “religion” in the mid~east...they think they’ve got it all figured out too.

You will not stoop? You can’t stoop any lower, so no worries there. All I asked of you was an apology that was due - you lied about what I said (that is nasty and a liar) and do not have enough character assets to pay the debt on your arrogant assumptions - so the adjectives I used are accurately descriptive, not “name calling” at all.

My reaction is not that you didn’t agree with me, but that you made false assumptions about me, lied about me, and finally do not have the sack to apologize for your mistakes. My intent was simply to make your deficit of character abundantly clear to any who might read our exchange. Mission accomplished - thank you for your help.
