Liberal media, White House owes preppers and survivalists a massive apology
share.banoosh.com ^ | 11/4/12 | Mr. M

In the wake of superstorm Sandy, preppers are the new prophets. Those who failed to prepare are the new homeless.

For as long as we can all remember, preppers and survivalists have been derided by the mainstream media, labeled “kooks” and “wing nuts” for stockpiling food, water, ammunition, medical supplies and emergency gear. Only paranoid conspiracy theorists engage in evil preparedness activities, we were told by the sellout mainstream media, and they’ve convinced many that preppers may even be terrorists.

The very word “stockpiling” has been used in a derogatory manner, as if it’s somehow bad for private citizens to stockpile food, medicine and emergency supplies that might save lives in a crisis. Never mind that the government stockpiles all these things for its own survival; citizens are routinely taught that stockpiling is bad!

Suddenly all that has changed. In the aftermath of superstorm Sandy, preppers are the ones who aren’t starving, freezing or begging the government to come save them with emergency supplies. Those who failed to prepare are now subjected to the chaotic, incompetent actions of the federal government which is, predictably, operating in a never-ending state of logistical failure.

An one example, in response to the ongoing scarcity of gasoline, New York announced that the Defense Department would be opening up free gas stations near areas hardest-hit, but that residents should stay away and let first responders fuel up ahead of them.

I won't hold my breath seeing how even with Sandy there are still even FReepers who are mock and deny the need to prep. One of the worse did come forward on one post and grudgingly agree that 3-4 days of stuff was probably OK, but any more was crazy and unneeded waste.

Preppers are mocked and laughed at until disaster hits then everyone comes knocking on our door for help. I don’t give it unless it’s to another prepper.

We got hit by that massive storm on June 29. We had electricity, clean water, and decent comfort. We also had a LOT of people wanting to use our resources for their own needs.

Sorry, I prepared for myself and my family. Not the neighborhood. When it comes down to it, you are responsible for yourself... no one else.

In that list needing to print official apologies, do NOT forget the so-called Janet the 2nd’s Department of Homeland Security, for including ‘preppers’ as ‘homegrown terrorists’!!!

The government talk has already begun with the word, ‘hoarding’, instead of ‘stockpiling’ food, although it is a practice among the LDS church.

1 - Their “Bug Out” gear ready,

2 - An alternate destination to survive.

it’s an interesting thing what some people call prepping or stockpiling others call a way of life. Where I live a trip to town happens maybe once every two weeks or even a month. We make daily lists of items that are required to restock and come “shopping day” it’s a major trip and we pack a lot into the truck.

But I still don’t consider that a lot, when I was much younger I had the privilege of meeting an old light house keeper in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He told me of how they only made two trips a year to town for supplies and the most important one was in the middle of winter when the ice was thick enough to hold the weight of the dray wagons. Two days to get to town and three days there getting supplies, then when they were done they would need four or five wagons and the teamsters to drive them. Then they would make their way back to the light house. And be in solitude for another six months.

Imagine how the Government would look at a “prepper” who bought in quantities like that? Ease of transportation and same-day stocking have really wrecked the formerly independent lifestyle of Americans.

What we are seeing is what will happen country wide if power goes out all over the country, no matter what caused it. When there is no power, there is no gasoline and won’t be any until power is restored. Bad guys, as we have seen here, are limited to the area where they can walk. A few have cars but that is the exception and if gas wasn’t coming back, they wouldn’t have those cars to use for travel.

In other words, without power and fuel, the country stops and no one is going anywhere without walking there and if there is no water and food, they die where they are. Some people may have bicycles but that is local travel and without water and food, that also stops.

In New York, in my opinion, Mayor Bloomberg is responsible for every person the bad guys kill just as if he did it as no one is allowed to have a gun except the bad guys. The easiest for the bad guys to kill are the elderly. There is not enough law enforcement to stop the killing and robbing and without citizens having guns, they are helpless and are murdered in their houses or on the street.

If the entire country is without power, the above scenario will repeat itself across the country – except in those states where people have guns. Bad guys will stop or die in those states. The more preppers there are in a carry state, the safer the state will be.

If I lived in New York City, I would make every effort to leave there and go to a carry area or state. And, no matter where I lived, I would be a prepper to create my own world in case the outside world collapsed, which it just did in the northeast. There is information all over the web explaining how to begin prepping so one has water and food and necessary supplies AND security. Many of us call this “living insurance”.

Government cannot help fast enough when millions are involved and I understand FEMA may have water available Monday. That is a week after it happened. A person may die after three days without water. I won’t depend on FEMA for water or food or anything that keeps me alive.

My hope is many people will become preppers after this Sandy Hurricane experience. Provide your own “living insurance”.

Of course, I will request payment in cash or trade goods. That reminds me, I want to add a few clean, steel 55 gal. drums to my preps. I prefer to be paid in gasoline!

My neighbor will be providing security overwatch with ARs and scoped rifles.

Oh yeah, kids under 16 eat free.

I will not go it alone. I will organize friends and neighbors. An organized group always survives better.

In my personal experience, I was able to send a great amount of items I’d prepped and saved to friends on the Gulf Coast to use after Katrina hit. The stores were emptied of batteries, gas cans, certain foods, bottled water and many other items even this far North in Mississippi but what I’d stored was what he needed and I sent it to him. It was not wasted.

“Preppers got the last laugh. Enjoy it.”

You think Preppers are happy that people are starving and being killed? You don’t know Preppers. We encourage everyone to store water and food because it is necessary to live and we don’t want anyone to die for lack of water and food. If for some reason it isn’t there to be had, then the person will still have it in his/her house. That is a basic truth – water and food is life – store some. It can’t get any simpler than that.

I am a prepper of sorts. I have enough canned food, water, along with other essentials to last my family about a month of so. I am constantly trying to add to, and improve upon, my supplies. This most recent storm revealed a few short-comings in my preps. I learned from family that is stuck there in NJ/NY that you should always keep all your vehicles full of gas and you should have a good amount of cash (say $1000+). Those are two things I am going to make sure I have from now on. I would like to do a lot more, but my funds are limited and I am currently living in an apartment which prevents me from storing gas. On the bright side, I am well equipped with weapons and ammo ...something a lot of law-abiding people in NY/NJ areas are not.

It’s not a matter of the last laugh, it’s a matter of being demonized by the media and our Government, being called Terrorists, and whack jobs, and other derogatory names BY the Government when in recent times, at least twice, the Government has failed miserably to do the job it gave itself when it began the assault on preppers.

The Government failed in Katrina, the Government failed during the drecho storm that had power out for days and weeks in the mid Atlantic, and the Government failed in Sandy. That’s three right there.

The Government needs to shut it’s mouth and stop throwing stones in their house of glass. They can take care of the idiots that are unprepared for any kind of disaster. I’m not going to. I found it absolutely rude that people around here, who I and others told to prepare for such a disaster came knocking on my door begging to use my generator, my food, my flashlights, my supplies that I spent my money on and worked hard to put together when they sat on their butts and refused to do anything for themselves. The exception to this were the two elderly neighbors across the street that tried to prepare but were hindered by a very limited budget. We helped them out and shared willingly because they tried everything within their means.

Last laugh, no. To quote a comment about the show the Walking Dead. Everyone makes fun of the redneck until the zombies come. Same with preppers.

Probably. I even think I know who you are thinking of.

HOWEVER, it's probably moot. The government can track what you buy on line, and that means most preppers are already on their list.

It's essentially certain that anyone who posts regularly on prepping issues is also already on their list.

Remember, preppers have officially been designated as possible terrorists, which means the government has given itself the authority to do this. They aren't even trying to hide it.

BTW: Homeland Security has purchased over a billion rounds of hollow point ammunition. There is only one possible target for this much ammo: us. Since most preppers can and will defend themselves, Homeland Security apparently thinks they will need a lot of ammo.

Several things here.

1) Preppers are seen as weirdos when they’re prepping for something most of the population don’t think is a threat. I’m not saying preppers are wrong, but “regular” people don’t think it’s weird for someone to stock up before a hurricane.

2) There was a mandatory evacuation. In such a case, everyone should have been either leaving or prepping. Anyone doing neither of those is just in denial.

3) The media and liberals malign preppers because they understand “stockpiling” just like they understand the economy. They think that if someone is stockpiling a resource, there will necessarily be less of it for everyone else. This is not true until production of the resource stops. Liberals approach every situation like it’s a zero-sum game. Prepping isn’t. The economy isn’t. Liberals and stupid, lazy people will always want the fruits of other people’s labor.

4) There’s something missing from the prepping community: optimism. Everyone is Harold Camping. I’d love to meet a positive prepper. Maybe more encouragement and less doomsdayism would result in more people prepping.

Flame away.

Do you not follow the prepper threads here on FR?

I don't prep for doomsday... I prep for the normal tornados and damaging straight line winds we get here.

Mainly, I prep so that I can continue my wonderful life with minumum disruption that involves being hungry, cold, and wet. Uncle gave me lots of hungry, cold, and wet experiences. I don't like them one bit. Not at all.

So I do what it takes to make sure I'm fed (well), warm, and dry.

A disaster would really cut into my historical reading time.

Perhaps you have a stereotype in mind that doesn't match reality. ;)

A disaster can happen anywhere. I never expected a flood in Nashville, but; I do recall Bush reminding us after 9/11. Now, Obama and Clinton waltz around like best pals, but; neither did one damn thing to help Americans prepare. FEMA is still same damn joke it always was. Clowns is exactly what they are. They are paper pushers that have seminars at expensive resorts but do no actual work. I’m an RN, a HAM, have taken the FEMA Professional Development course, and am a CAP member (inactive because they’re so FUBAR.) FEMA is a government PR op. They’re very happily drawing a paycheck, but have not interest in actually doing anything to help. FEMA is like one of those really tiny band-aids thrown at a hemorrhage.

I would hope everyone learned a lesson this time around and do whatever stocking up they can reasonably afford. The violence and killing after the fact will be a result of the Have-nots trying to get their hands on the stuff of the Haves. It won't take long for the Haves to understand the basic rule of survival: protect your personal property. A person trying to forcibly take your personal property is trying to kill you in order to save himself. Those who can't protect themselves and their property are doomed.

Alas, the collective memory of the majority of Americans is excruciatingly short. Most of those people who intend to do some basic prepping today will put it off and then, in three months, will have totally forgotten about the devastation we know as Sandy.

Remember, cops don't prevent crime, they investigate crimes after the fact. Law enforcement after the fact does nothing to eliminate either the terror or consequences of the crime while it is being committed.

Non-preppers (and all governments) don't recognize or understand the concept of a Black Swan. [For those who aren't familiar with the Black Swan Concept, years ago it was “common” knowledge that there was no such thing as a Black Swan, and then, one day, a Black Swan showed up.] Preppers are not prepping for something they know is going to happen, they are prepping for the unexpected, the unthinkable, or unknowable. Preppers are prepping for the Black Swan.

Not a spark from me, thought I will say that your flame statement shows that you expect the worse from preppers which makes me think there’s something missing from your view of preppers, that is not to judge us as a whole but one at a time. I ask you is a fireman who trains for a three alarm he many never respond to a pessimistic? Of policeman at a gun range who may never be forced to shoot someone? Or a solider training for nuclear war that never occurs?

That said I think that preppers are actually very optimist. What we say and prep for is should bad times come we or the SHTF will have the training and the tools to handle them and survive them.

We encourage others to do the same as we so that they and their families can weather storms as well, yes some storms may never come, but rare is a life that doesn’t have to to weather some type of storm. Bad things occur and many aren’t Hurricanes were you get days of warning before, but by sharing our knowledge, experiences and ideas with others shows that we are not saying we are all going to die, we are saying if you prepare you and your families might live or at least not suffer near as much when and if they do occur.

After all planning to survive SHTF takes lots of optimism and of course faith, but not planing is very pessimistic and to me is like saying why bother it will do no good any way.

4) There’s something missing from the prepping community: optimism.

I think you've got that backwards.

Preppers are optimistic and self confident enough to think they can survive a SHTF scenario.

As far as I can see, those who hate preppers (hate is the right word) are the exact opposite. They do not think they can survive, and don't want anyone else to either. Now THAT is what I call a rotten attitude!

A much more mature attitude on the part of the non-prepping majority would be to simply ignore those who prep. If you don't want to prep, fine. If you do, that's fine too.

So why the anger towards those who prep?

I am anticipating things will get nasty after the election. Hubby just flew out to Rhode Island on business for 3 days. Hope that goes well. First election night in 34 years we have been apart. Hope to at least Skype in the evening and hope FR site will be working good. Will definitely be checking in on MSNBC’c coverage, a station we never watch but it should be entertaining and strangely satisfying Tuesday night. The Poll Bubble is about to burst. FEMA is a bad joke. US Military could easily get it done if the corrupt, criminal pols would GTH out of the way.

I agree. It beats the hell out of me, unless Clinton fears Obozzo will throw Hilliary under the bus like he does everyone. Hilliary and the Muslim gal, who is her top aide, are something that surprised me. I am not insinuating any gay stuff. What I do know is the Sec of State is responsible for every ambassador’s health, safety, and welfare. Hilliary had overall responsibility in Libya unless Obozzo and/or Jarrett took over. My gut feeling is Jarrett and Soros run Obama. Obama has silenced Holder for several months.

I know that Jarrett is 0bummer’s controller; I’ve always thought Soros was in that ‘mix’ too, somehow. You’re 100% spot-on, L20.
