Mitt Romney was already facing a hard time within his party when it comes to his stance on illegal immigration.
Now, the presumptive GOP nominee faces criticism on the issue from a potential running mate, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R).
In an interview with Newsweeks Andrew Romano, Martinez takes aim at self-deportation, an idea promoted by Romney during the GOP primary and one at the heart of Arizonas controversial S.B. 1070 anti-illegal immigration law.
As we sit down at a local Starbucks, I ask about immigration. Its a topic she has been reluctant to discuss since winning the Republican primary in 2010, so what comes next is surprising: a battle plan that contradicts nearly everything the GOP has been doing and saying since 2007, Romneys self-deportation strategy included. Self-deport? What the heck does that mean? Martinez snaps. I have no doubt Hispanics have been alienated during this campaign. But now theres an opportunity for Gov. Romney to have a sincere conversation about what we can do and why.

She’s lost me. Not another dime or defending her.
Ping.
Attacking Romney for being too tough on illegals was the beginning of the end for Newt.
At a Starbucks?
I guess this woman really has no clue about the base of the GOP.
I am on the border and affirm it’s true — when there are no jobs because of the poor economy or enforcement of employer sanctions, the wetbacks go home. Martinez is a liar; she knows what self-deportation is and how it works. She can go @#$% herself.
Yep. And how quickly the Newt supporters forgot.
I love that movie, F-C! Have watched it again and again. I also love Bullit & North by Northwest which was supposedly precursor of 007 movies. Another great movie is Day of the Jackal.
There’s a line I love by Roy Scheider, wish I could remember it. He said it as the French arrived to ask for their car back.
The French were trying to bring poison into our country.
So are the Mexicans. Every day.
I say make Harry Callahan head of the Border Patrol and Popeye Doyle can take Nappy’s job, since she’s not using it.
Too bad about Martinez. Sounds like she’s just another Napolitano after all.

I want to study the full context of that statement before making final judgement on guv Martinez. If found true, it is indeed a disappointment.
I do not blame you considering that this is a Washington Post article.
She knows damn well what it means, AND she knows it works.
Just another two-bit pandering POS politician.
