The man who was caught slaughtering a dog at the Nakuru dumpsite a few days ago has told a court that he did not know it was an offence.
James Cheboto told Resident Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku that he was not aware that dog meat was unfit for human consumption and pleaded for leniency.
Cheboto was charged with being found in possession of dog meat which is unfit for human consumption and contrary to Public Health Act.
He pleaded guilty of the offence but pleaded with the court to forgive him because he did not know that it was wrong to feed on dog meat.
"I did not know that dog meat is unfit for human use and I appeal to this court to forgive me and set me free because I am the sole-breadwinner for my family," said the 37-year-old father of one.
The court also heard that Cheboto had been charged two other times but with different offences.
On May 1, Cheboto was found at the Nakuru dumpsite by residents of London Estate slaughtering a dog.
The angry residents made him carry the dog's carcase, the skin and the head to the nearby Nakuru District Veterinary offices two kilometres away.
There was drama on the Nakuru-Kabarak road as the angry residents escorted him with his exhibits with motorists and passers-by stopping to catch a glimpse of him.
At the veterinary offices, he confessed to slaughtering dogs, boiling the carcases and using the soup to 'treat epilepsy.'

The rationale I’ve heard is that Mad Mo’ was a caravan robber and dogs tended to warn his victims; ergo, when he started his “religion” he made sure that dogs were haram. No doubt if Bill Clinton started his own religion, DNA testing would be similarly forbidden.
