LOL, I'll tell you about the "one" that I saw late one dark night. It had lights, like navigation lights, only lots more than normal and it was HUGE! As large as a 747 flying overhead at about 500'.
What was spooky was that it was making absolutely no sound that I could detect. I though maybe it's a dirigible with idling engines or a military transport practicing a dead-stick landing. It disappeared behind the trees and never made a sound.
The reason I mentioned a possible decline in sightings is because I recently happened upon a government listing of UFO reports. Most seemed to have occurred from about 1945 until the 70's. It was a shocking number and many reports simply remarked as "unknown".
I will tell you this:
I have been "chased" by the planet Venus while flying at night in a very remote area.
It was a trick of perception ... but for several minutes it was both convincing and frightening.
*Something’s out there*, but I’m not sure I want to know for sure.
Your description is almost identical with a craft my wife saw near San Luis Obispo, CA: lots of lights, fairly low altitude and absolutely silent. One more really odd thing: it seemed capable of making right-angle, not curved, course changes. She said it appeared to be V-shaped. That part of CA isn't too many flight miles from Area 51 and we've always figured it was a military test of some kind.
