Geraldo Rivera’s son: I’m ‘ashamed’ of my father’s remarks about Trayvon Martin and his hoodie

Rivera created a firestorm earlier this week when he argued the hoodie the unarmed teen chose to wear when he was killed in Florida was as much to blame for his death as the man that shot him

Even Geraldo Rivera's son is disappointed in his father's controversial remarks about Trayvon Martin.

"My own son just wrote to say he's ashamed of my position," the Fox News contributor tweeted on Friday.

Rivera created a firestorm earlier this week when he argued the hoodie the unarmed teen chose to wear when he was killed in Florida was as much to blame for his death as the man that shot him.

Despite his own family's harsh criticism, Rivera refused to budge on his position, adding on Twitter "Still I feel parents must do whatever they can to keep their kids safe."

Rivera elaborated on his 32-year-old son's shame to Politico.

"Gabriel broke my heart…He just told me for the first time in his life he's ashamed," he told the political website, adding his son told him he had "gone viral for all the wrong reasons."

Rivera said he wrote Gabriel back and tried to explain his position that "every hoodie should come with a warning like cigarettes, 'caution wearing this could get you killed.'"

Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla. He was returning home from a trip to a convenience store when neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman started following the teen, telling police dispatchers that he looked suspicious.

So many things to be ashamed of if Geraldo’s your father - but he picks THIS one? How many dopes are in that family?

And if this mob chit keeps up, white boys with shaved heads will need worry, too.

Geraldo sees what may be a cause in the shooting and try to warn other young men of a possible danger and your ashamed? I do not agree with Geraldo on a lot of things, but to try to warn others of a danger real or not is not one of them.

I saw a current photo of this 6’2”, 190# “child” on an earlier post. I would like to see a current picture of Trayvon next to one of Obama and see if there is a family resemblance.

Sorry, I’ve seen too many of those things worn by criminals that the mere sight of one gives me the shivers. It reminds me of the bad old days in NYC when some brat was coming towards me doing the “pimp roll.”

Geraldo is right. The same way a mother is right when she tells her daughter either to not dress provocatively or avoid areas where dressing provocatively causes trouble (i.e.construction sites).

Like Rush, I live in Realville.

Heraldo is first of all, Hispanic. And the shooter, in this instance, Jorge Zimmerman, also LOOKS Hispanic. Therefore Heraldo was in a position of DEFENDING the shooter against charges of “racism”, which is considered to be a very bad thing among “people of color”.

But wearing a hoodie, that is a conspicuous act in itself, one that effectively HIDES most racial characteristics. Kind of like a unisex burqa, meant to conceal, and often, other than merely facial features.

Liberal defecate rocks about persons who might be carrying a weapon, but they calmly accept clothing style that may be concealing much more than a Glock?

Could have been a vest bomb or a hand grenade under that hoodie.

I am starting to wonder if “the hoodie” controversy breaks down among city people versus rural people. In rural and suburban neighborhoods, the hoodie is simply a garment. For those who live in giant, Democratically-run, corrupt cities, the hoodie means something else.

I don’t care for Geraldo but he makes sense on this point. Recently I was out walking and had my hoody up because it was windy here in San Jose. A county Sheriff drove by me slowly and looked me up and down. I wasn’t offended. He was doing his job and I admit I looked suspicious.

In the book “The Gift of Fear” the author points out that we “profile” as a survival mechanism and some people are killed because they ignore that instinct to be politically correct. I raise my “alert” radar in numerous situations: Latinos with prison tattoos and/or sporting gang colors, blacks on BART wearing “thug” clothing, white bikers, Vietnamese gangsters etc. I freely admit I avoid areas where there is a lot of gang activity or high levels of crimes committed by blacks (most of Oakland, Richmond, Hunters Point-Bayview area of San Francisco). Oakland has a crime rate at least 3x of that of San Jose (and most of the homicides here are gang-related.)

Every night on my local news, I watch teenagers doing the perp walk and they are almost always wearing hoodies. They are good for committing crimes (more comfy than a ski mask) and excellent for hiding from the cameras after an arrest.

I agree with you that the image you wish to portray comes out loud and clear in your clothing whether it’s a hoody and gangster garb or a dress that is slit up to your waist. However, Geraldo is missing a bigger point which should be the breakdown of the black American family. Too many fathers are not truly parenting their kids and the poor kids are the worse off for it. Where’s Bill Cosby when you need him? Where’s the leadership in the black community?

Hoodies are just bad news, no matter where or when they are worn and no matter who is wearing the hoodie.

Law enforcement officials such as policemen and neighborhood watch captains should almost always question those who are wearing a hoodie.
