The firm hand of a father would solve 90% of these problems. Yeah, I know there are true problems out there, but with kids running wild and parents caringmore about their social lives than their kids, it’s no wonder kids are acting up, which again would be solved by a fathers firm hand.

School districts get paid more for a child on ritalin. I watched it myself as I worked for a school districts health office. Teachers would heavily encourage parents to put their kids on ... Cha Ching.

Eh. ADHD is a real condition—though it’s both over-diagnosed and under-diagnosed.

I didn’t dxed with it until my mid-20s, but I’m glad I did.

Problems of attention deficit in children have been recognized and discussed pediatrically since at least 1902, so all these amateur off the cuff explanations will have to account for "causes" that were around a hundred years ago.

Well, congratulations on your awakening! If you look at the past 50 years and look at the suggestions, recommendations, etc. of this group, you will find a major discrepancy.

Their recommendations change over time and many time go 180 degrees against the previous recommendation. Surely that should make you question their advice!

I’ve looked at things like salt intake, fat intake, sugar intake, vitamin supplements, and you can go on and on...

These things keep changing with more information - ie. the original diagnosis was WRONG!

How about just letting most folks live their lives and as long as they don’t over indulge in any particular area - they should be just fine!

Doctors advice is about 30% correct as I see it and you should take their advice with two grains of salt!

When Can a Child With ADHD Get Disability?

If the severity of your child’s ADHD meets the Social Security Administration’s impairment listing for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, your child will be granted benefits. (snip)

I know a 10 year old swimmer that takes adderal at meets. He goes from a quiet kid to a Mexican jumping bean instantly. Kid is one of the best in the state but will max out at 5 ft. 4. Father is a maniac. If I had proof I would report it but all we found was some Energy drink containers and saw him puff up with asthma inhaler. He doesn’t have Asthma.

If you are a parent whose child takes Ritalin, PLEASE try and stop. Start them instead on 200mg L-Theanine, a natural harmless amino acid glutamic acid analog, which has similar effective properties as Ritalin, but without any of the disturbing psychodistortional effects.

There is an actual disorder or rather group of disorders that give ADD ADHD symptoms but have a Neurological origin fairly easy too diagnose and requires no strong medication too treat. It's called Central Auditory Processing Disorders they are disorders related to the Vestibular system and sensory processing. All children with history of sinus allergies, chronic ear infections etc should be tested for it by an Audiologist or Speech Pathologist.

Dysfunctions within the Vestibular System and sensory processing can also trigger anxiety. If a child lets say is told too take out the trash and does not respond that could be the problem If the child hears it a second time they may say huh? Or when you repeat the third time they do it. It's not a deliberate I'm ignoring you but rather they are simply just then processing what you said.

Placing a kid up close too the teacher helps in school. The kid will likely have great difficulty taking notes so I would recommend a recorder for that. The kid isn't lazy but rather the kid can not do the multi-task of hearing and writing at the same time. Also real important is the fact that their concentration may be greatly hindered similar to ADD ADHD. These kids may also have issues with their balance or coordination and associated eye problem as well. They may have trouble reading such as skipping words, sentences, or even a paragraph. They may show having trouble recognizing spelling errors and sentencing structure. That is also common with CAPD.

Why has this happened? Why could this be the actual ADD ADHD rise we've seen? The condition as such has always been there. But due to advances in technology it is being triggered. Video games can trigger it. Sounds can trigger it as can background noises. Many things simply were not around 30-40 years ago. TV was black and white and relatively low tech meaning very little special affects. Now the TV is bombarding them with strobing and flashing ever changing scenes. This is a life long issue as it will not go away.

I highly advise and parent who is told their child might have ADD ADHD to have this checked out. If the kid has it you do not want that child on Ritalin or any ADD ADHD treatment as such.

I have seen both sides of the coin... 1 child diagnosed by a clinical psychiatrist with severe add, another one normal, yet told by the school system he had add.... The normal one I never let get stuck with this label, hell the teachers thought they knew more than the clinical psychiatrist... but, the one child diagnosed, The ritalin not only helped him, but improved his grades and outlook. When he was 14, he did not want to take the ritalin anymore ( he had to go to the office and have it given to him, that is what he did not like ) the kids grades dropped from b’s to d’s overnight. But, I never saw a kid work so hard to get those d’s. He applied himself more than when he was taking the ritalin, to get worse grades. I was proud of him for the work ethic he possessed, and he never gave up.

These threads piss me off. The ignorant, the dieticians, the disciplinarians, all doubt that this condition is real or that it exists. Do the schools want to medicate your child? Yes, because they get more money for someone with a learning disability. This does not mean this condition does not exist. It just means it does not occur as often as is stated.

Ritalin when first made was marketed as a diet drug. When I did not sell in the quantities need it was remarketed as an ADD cure all.

My personal experience with kids with ADD is the attention deficit is from the parents and not the kids head. Results may vary.

My almost 6 year-old son doesn’t watch tv, doesn’t play video games, eats only whole foods without complaint (no junk, no soda, no juice, no hot lunch at school, no fast food, no food dyes, no wheat), gets 11 hrs of sleep a night, has a stable, 2-parent home where discipline is enforced, a stay-at-home mom, and a supportive extended family structure.

He takes fish oil supplements (high in EPA and DHA) and magnesium and zinc daily.

He’s bright, and attends a great, no-nonsense private school with a small class size. His teacher is on board with every solution we’ve tried.

He can’t sit still, can’t focus on his school work, gets sent home for poor behavior, and gets notes sent home on his behavior pretty much every day. It would not surprise me if he gets expelled within the month.

I physically walk him into his class every morning now, and get him in the afternoon from his classroom so I can talk with the teacher about his day (and how he “tried” to do well but couldn’t). He has a tactile ball in his pocket for fidgeting, he has a note in his desk that I wrote for how to stay on track with his work. None of it helps. It’s the most frustrating, embarrassing, and puzzling situation we’ve ever dealt with in our lives. Meds may have to be the solution.

So, my conclusion is, poor diet and lack of discipline, tv and video games, liberal public schools, and lax parenting aren’t the only causes of ADHD. There are other, non-controllable factors at work in some cases. And, taking into consideration this child’s healthy lifestyle, there really is no other alternative. We are at our wit’s end.

Any doctor who prescribes this crap for more than half of one percent of children should have his license revoked. In my school system locally, 28% of the kids have been “coded” as handicapped in some way. They line up at the nurse’s office every day to get their drugs. It’s criminal.

Almost every successful adult I know would probably have been drugged if that crap had been around when I was a kid. There are a few individuals who cannot function without it, but the operative word is “few.”

30327 has the highest per capita Ritalin usage rate in the USoA. Knew a second grader boy in an elite "Christian" school who was directed to the learning (prescription) team for evaluation. Their ONLY solution was chemical..Today, all psychological problems are solved chemically.

The parents had a short chat with their son. Asked why he didn't pay better attention in class he replied, "I don't like that teacher at all."

Ritalin is a slow working rat poison. Drug dependancy crashes are tragic. Witnessed to many speedball college deaths and broken dreams .

Juiced kids are zombies.
