President Johnsons daisy petals and mushroom clouds TV ad targeting Barry Goldwater only aired once officially during 1964 campaign. But its now recognized as one of the most iconic campaign ads of all time with its influence on political advertising clearly evident today.
The story behind the ad reveals just how bold and transformative it was, Louisiana State University communications professor Robert Mann told ABC News Top Line. Mann is the author of Daisy Petals and Mushroom Clouds: LBJ, Barry Goldwater, and the Ad That Changed American Politics.
It was an unusual way to start a presidential campaign. It was the first spot of that campaign by Johnson, going hard negative on Goldwater, but he wanted a mandate, and he wanted to go after Goldwaters vulnerability, which was Goldwaters reckless talk about nuclear war and nuclear weapons, said Mann.

Very telling how the liberal news anchor is almost aroused by this ad that was a vicious attack on Barry Goldwater.
“I was told that if I voted for Goldwater, we’d have riots in the streets, and get into a long, unwinnable war....well I voted for him...and darned if they weren’t right.”
What was so funny about the ad is that it was designed to scare the public into believing that if we elected Goldwater, we’d certainly be at war. So LBJ wins and dramatically ramps up the most infamous war in US history.
That particular ad probably did as much to eclipse the conservative movement in America for a generation, as the cumulative effect of the JFK assassination, the Viet Nam war, and the Cuban Missile crisis put together.
Visual images are of almost unaccountable power, and it was one of the most effectve products the Soviet facilitators ever managed to place in the American consciousness.
The end result was that Richard Nixon looked almost benign by comparison.
I believe that LBJ’s then Press Secretary Bill Moyers was involved with the showing of that ad.
As "funny" as Wilson running with the slogan, "He Kept Us Out of War."
The dumbasses showing the ad on the website cut-off the first half, ruining its power.
Lee Harvey Oswald was from Louisiana; however, Dallas was regarded as a city of hate after JFK was assasinated. Why was that? It was because Dallas was avant garde in expressing Conservative ideas back then and the media wanted to smear Dallas and rightwing ideas.
Remember it very well and really [issed me off...Went out and made up a bnch of Goldwater signs and had neighbors doing the same...
Liberals always have to be reminded that it was a COMMIE that killed JFK, which explains why kooky conspiracy theories have such play with them, they don't want to accept the fact that JFK's killer was a lefty.
LBJ yet ANOTHER “World-Famous””Inside-the-Beltway” Lying BASTARD!(wasn’t HE from Texas too(just wondering)?(I bet AT LEAST he was born there(Texas)).
Has anyone in the MSM, then or now:
“in the Second World War entered active service in August 1941 in the United States Army Air Corps, serving in the Asiatic Theater in India, and was discharged in November 1945 as a lieutenant colonel with rating as pilot; organized the Arizona National Guard 1945-1952; brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve in 1959 and promoted to major general in 1962; retired in 1967 after thirty-seven years service” - Biographical Directory of the United States Congress
So why, is this important? During the 1964 Presidential Campaign Senator Goldwater was also Major General, USAF Res, who had flown actual combat strikes over Vietnam.
The deep dark secret about Goldwater was he was absolutely right about Vietnam. In 1964 he was quoted about sending the B-52s North and bombing the North Vietnamese back to the stone age. To force an end to American involvement in Vietnam, 8 years later President Nixon did send the B-52s North and we did bomb them back to the stone age in less than 4 weeks serious negotiations in Paris were resumed and 8 months later US combat operations ceased through SE Asia.
IMHO - LBJ and the contemporary MSM 1964 - 1969 are responsible for most, it not all, combat deaths, American, Allied, North Vietnamese and their allies January 1965 - January 1972. How can I say this? Very simple - what LBJ and the media painted as a dangerous path the could lead to nuclear war was the actual path successfully pursued 8 years later with minimal risk of escalating into World War III.
“President Johnsons daisy petals and mushroom clouds TV ad targeting Barry Goldwater only aired once OFFICIALLY during 1964 campaign.”
It kicked off LBJ’s campaign, and was considered so shockingly lowdown, dirty, and out of bounds, it didn’t have to be run but once OFFICIALLY on TV, because the ad was replayed on the news, at campaign events - in short it was self-sustaining. Yep, the pinkos reached a new low with that ad.

If I ever get my hands on a time machine I am going back to eliminate LBJ sometime in the 1950’s.
I don’t care if it creates a divergent timeline, it would be worth it.
What???? Bill Moyers isn’t nonpartisan? Next you’ll be telling me George Snuffleupagus at ABC worked for Clinton.
The old media has their noses so far up the Democrat’s behinds that they can see what kind of breath mint they’re using.
Look to see Obama put out such adds against Newt—the war monger—Newt the mad man—new the abuser of women and little dogs. Same commercials—will be used on Mittens—Mitt The Mormon, mitt the capitalist pig, Mitt the two faced filp foppery. Just wait—this will be the dirtiest race since 1860—and we all know how that turned out.
