Washington, DC, December 1, 2011 -- Only 21 percent of surveyed medical students could identify five true and two false indications of when and when not to wash their hands in the clinical setting, according to a study published in the December issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, the official publication of APIC - the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
Three researchers from the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hospital Epidemiology at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany collected surveys from 85 medical students in their third year of study during a lecture class that all students must pass before bedside training and contact with patients commences. Students were given seven scenarios, of which five ("before contact to a patient," "before preparation of intravenous fluids," "after removal of gloves," "after contact to the patient's bed," and "after contact to vomit") were correct hand hygiene (HH) indications. Only 33 percent of the students correctly identified all five true indications, and only 21 percent correctly identified all true and false indications.

Worked for years and saw doctors that never washed their hands..they just went from pt to pt..
Never been to medical school, but even I know to wash my hands before each new patient, or use alcohol disinfectant, and each time each time you touch a surface that can carry germs.
The best health advice is to stay away from doctors and hospitals if at all possible.
“Imagine there’s no hygiene
it isn’t hard to do.”
heartening.

I’ve had one step out of the restroom still zipping up.
Once, when I was in the hospital and not able to protest, the nurse dropped the needle on the floor, picked it up, and gave me the shot.
Kudos, my man! *slow clap*
You got that right! The 'best' (once was, but now very poor) hospital in our area (North Hollywood - Burbank,) is Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
I know the details of two people who were literally murdered there, one thru experimentation, the other through deliberate neglect. They happened to be man and wife, husband died there a couple of years prior. They were my wife's parents.
We've seen the world's best hospitals become little more than third-world hell-holes.
I probably should have washed my hands after I snaked the toilet drain today huh?
The difference between a D.V.M. and an M.D. is that a D.V.M washes his hands before and after he goes to the restroom.
Medical people for all their education are some of the stupidest people I have come across. Add arrogance and you really have something.
Darlin’, they know. They just don’t.
Could be so.
Hey, I know the punch line to this one.
In medical school they teach us not to pi$$ on our hands.
Sorry old Navy Marine joke bubbling up
The scary thing is when you reach the point where you wash your hands before you go to the bathroom, I spare you the reasoning.
This is what happens when doctors come to rely too much on antibiotics and disinfectants in lieu of proper sanitary procedures.
I make sure my patients see my wash my hands when I walk into a treatment room, then put on gloves. I had it drummed into me as a surgery resident. One of the major medical discoveries historically was that washing hands saved lives and decreased infection. No other discovery including antibiotics has lowered infection rates as much as this one. Amazing that something so basic still needs to be reinforced.
