Despite turning a blocked punt into a touchdown, the USC Trojans narrowly lost to Washington on a rainy afternoon at the Coliseum. This is our fourth loss in a row and the sixth loss in a season that has given us only two wins. However, we’re a young team with a new coach that despite the losses, seems to be improving. Last week, we gave the high-flying Domers a scare, and yesterday, we almost beat the Huskies.

Next week we have a bye before closing out the season against the UCLA Bruins at the Coliseum on December 6.

Hold on, here. According to my calculations December 6 is only 6 days off. How can the Trojans fit in a bye week?

You’re right! November sure went fast. I can’t believe December starts tomorrow, and I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping.

Xavier football, undefeated since 1973!

(When they ended the program...)

I'm confident the Trojans will do well against UCLA, which is coming off a bye after having been blown out by the Santa Clara Broncos last week (by the way, Santa Clara's theme song, "Varsity, Fight!" is one of my favorite football songs. Four years ago, Jimmy Grier's swing band did a fine arrangement of it).

The 4-4 Bruins have improved over the 1940 team that had only one win, but this year, their wins have essentially been over mediocre opponents such as Montana and Washington State, while Stanford, UC Berkeley and Oregon State have blown them out.

Wait until you see who not only played in, but hosted, the Rose Bowl that year!

Thanks for posing these articles. It gives one pause to look back one short week before the World changed forever.

Having julienned the Ducks yesterday, it looks as though Oregon State will be going to the Rose Bowl to face off against Duke. The city of Pasadena will be hosting the game--unless an earthquake, a war, etc. happens over the next month.

Duke, the undefeated Southern Conference champions will likely win. Although the Beavers lost to the Trojans in the season opener, they went on to plow under the Farm and cage the Golden Bears, and they're coming off a five-game win streak, so they can be expected to put up a fight.

Your message sounds ominous and chilling.

Getting back to sports, the football scene in the Southland will certainly change if the Bruins beat the Trojans next week at the Coliseum. USC has had no local rival in Southern California since Occidental College last beat us in 1918--and the Tigers dropped off of our schedule in 1934 (The Oxy Glee Club still sings, "USC, we have you beat. Today, you'll meet defeat from Oxy and the Black and Gold"--and they will likely be singing it decades into the future).

UCLA has never beaten us since we first played them in 1929, but they have tied us a couple of times.

” - - - Your message sounds ominous and chilling.”

Yes, that is how it affected me too to see the Army and Navy oblivious to the fate of the officers and future officers, many of whom undoubtedly later gave their last full measure of devotion.

It was the most significant change in our American Culture since the War of Northern Aggression.
