IU defeats Nebraska! I’m partying tonight!

As far as I know, this is the only victory Indiana has ever enjoyed over the Cornhuskers. I sat in a pouring rain in Memorial Stadium in 1978 to watch IU host Nebraska, and saw my Hoosiers lose 69-17 (it was something like 28-0 at the end of the 1st quarter). The worst part wasn’t the rain, or the score, but that on our way to the stadium we actually thought we had a chance to win. Well, as to why we thought that, I won’t say anything about college kids’ “activities” back in the 70’s.

Given the looks of the present Indiana Hoosiers, even though we are now in the same conference and will play the Huskers regularly, it’s still unlikely to happen again in the near future.

By the way, do you know what the “N” on Nebraska’s helmet stands for?

I haven't a clue. I have always wondered what the "N" on the Nebraska helmet stands for.

Pronounced "Nah-lidge."

Some people spell it with a "K" at the beginning of the word: Knowledge.

Love these posts... as I love any old sports films, stories, etc!

Fun fact... Indiana LEADS the overall series with the Cornhuskers 9-7-3. In 1944, IU handed NU what was their WORST defeat ever (54-0, until Texas Tech waxed ‘em 70-10 in 2004). IU’s last win was 23-7 in 1959. The Hoosiers have lost the last four meetings by lopsided scores. The 1978 rout was the last time they played. Like Duke, there is a reason IU plays basketball! ;) Great football website link below:

The USC Trojans finally won one, to conclude their four-game home stand on a positive note.

Next week, we go on the road for the first time this year to take on the University of California in Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium.

Over the years, Cal has been a formidable opponent. Although we won the first game between the two teams in 1915, a 28-10 romp up in Berkeley, USC’s record against the Golden Bears now stands at a paltry 9-14-1. Here’s hoping we can narrow the won-lost gap next week.

Fight on!

I love that joke. It’s the only humor I get at the expense of the Huskers.

On that 1978 rout, the reason we thought we had a chance was because we had played the Huskers the previous three seasons, and had been getting closer each game:

45-0
45-13
31-13

Also, in the Hoosiers two previous games in 1978 we lost a close game on the road to LSU 14-10 and defeated a ranked Washington State team 24-20. We deluded ourselves that we were getting good now. And so we thought until Nebraska’s players came out of the tunnel. My gosh they were big; it seemed they didn’t have legs. They had treads.

You guys better watch out. If you make them mad they might start playing their first team against yours.
