I saved this one for posting mainly because of the cast, which includes Charles Boyer, Olivia de Havilland, Paulettte Goddard and even Veronica Lake as an unnamed actress. Also, Billy Wilder is a co-director. This must be one of his earlier jobs in that role. The review is favorable, so I don’t know why “Hold Back the Dawn” fell into relative obscurity. I don’t remember seeing it before. Netflix doesn’t have it on DVD and there are no trailers or clips on TCM.com.

As you get closer and closer to Pearl Harbor..Dec 7th..it’s fascinating to skim through all the archives you post on all your threads..the US was mostly oblivious to what was about to happen..similar to where we were the summer of 2001..

Here is a three minute Youtube clip. Appears to be a skinny-dipping scene.

That’s an interesting review next to ‘Hold Back the Dawn’. I didn’t realize (NCIS) Mark Harmon’s father Tom was already in show business in 1941. He was only 20 and fresh off his Heisman Trophy year at Michigan and already making a movie, ‘Harmon of Michigan’. Little did he know he would soon end up as a pilot fighting WWII and having his plane shot down over China.

IMDB: Hold Back the Dawn (1941)

"Stopped in Mexico by U.S. Immigration, Georges Iscovescu hopes to get into the country by marrying a citizen." A Romanian gigolo marries a naive American schoolteacher in Mexico so he can legally enter the United States. Complications arise as he discovers he is falling in love with her.

They could do a remake today! Rick Perry could play himself and grant the entire cast amnesty.
