Kelly Thomas died of brain injuries, which resulted from blunt force trauma to the head, according to medical records released by Garo Mardirossian, Ron Thomas' lawyer.
At a press conference today at his Los Angeles office, Mardirossian told reporters he thinks the medical records are "clear evidence" that "Kelly Thomas was killed, murdered by these Fullerton police officers."
Thomas suffered several broken bones in his face, according to the medical records from UC Irvine's Medical Center, where Thomas died on July 10. (PDFs of the medical reports are at the end of the post.)
Mardirossian said he thinks the locations of the fractures are especially telling of the severity of the beating. "The bone inside the nose was also broken," Mardirossian said. "Now, these don't just break easily. They take a tremendous amount of pounding."

Poor Kelly. I feel really sorry this happened, I hope the police/killers feel even worse, but I doubt it.

What would have the outcome been if they had used “excessive” force and demonstrated NO control?
Their union will drum up propaganda for the cops to keep their jobs.
After all, he wasn’t a racial minority, and there was no rioting, so all is well and “he got what he deserved,” right?
I will go out on a limb now and opine that no charges will be filed against the officers. However, Mr. Kelly might be charged with damaging city property,[to wit] the oggicer’s night sticks.
Kelly’s father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle were/are all police officers.
It was “Beat the crap out of the homeless crazy guy.” and maybe he will hang out someplace else.
It got badly out of hand.

If I recall correctly, wasn’t this the young man who was homeless and simply ran away from the police when they showed up? If so, I remember that witness statements said he kept “calling for his Dad”. What at horrible time for his family... to know that while their son was being beaten and tazed to DEATH.. he called out for his Dad. Words fail me..

Yes, you do recall correctly. It struck me as odd you started your post that way. As I was reading this, I was thinking about how the police, DA, etc. were obfuscating and delaying, in the hopes the public outrage would die down, so they can quietly release their *findings* once public sentiment and focus have shifted to other matters. The fact that you were able to "recall correctly" the basic circumstances, means they'll have to wait a little longer until people don't recall correctly, or don't recall at all.
A sickening example of what kind of people can somehow find their way into law enforcement today, and the mindset that seems to be established in training. A major reformation, and redirection is needed desperately.
To date there is no record of any 911 or police call that cars were being burglarized, which is what the FPD have claimed. The word is that the Slidebar Cafe management was annoyed at Kelly and other homeless hanging around the parking lot, which is actually right in the transportation center, and wanted them disbursed, so a call to "someone" went out.
IMO the story about the car break-ins was invented to justify the incident. Not one person has publicly stepped forward to report or comment on any break-ins. However, it is well-known that Kelly would pick up cigarette butts all over the lot, and that the Slidebar was especially bothered by these actions as they felt it annoyed the patrons.
Draw your own conclusions.
Yes, this is the same incident. My 23-year old son lives within blocks of the location and I live nearby, so I have seen the makeshift memorial that has been set up by the locals often. The thought of him calling out his last words - "Please God, I'm sorry...Dad...Dad...Dad!" - is especially heartbreaking, given his mental state. He had been schitzophrenic for 20 years.
I pray for justice for this troubled soul and his family, but what true justice can there be? He is dead, after all.
If it wasn’t for the John and Ken radio show, the cops could do just about anything they want to here in southern California.

It is amazing how the people of California revere anybody connected to the government. It is like their religion.

I wasn’t 100% sure if I remembered the exact case. For example, I remember the case where the deaf Native American was shot in the back. I remember this one as well. Then there was the story about a Vet who was shot at a Costco? Hate to say this but with so many “questionable” cases involving police on citizen homicides... I struggle with keeping the facts straight. I don’t struggle with how disturbing and frightening the trend is...
Are you aware that one of the officers (and alleged primary assailant) had an eye shot out about 15 years earlier by a perp and was subsequently retired by the LAPD with a 70% disability pension? However, he had a good friend on the FPD who hired him even though their own handbook states officers must have solid vision in both eyes.
Aren't we lucky.

I think the only true justice is that the killers of this young man do the time. Justice can be equated with ensuring that they don’t do this to anyone else’s son (or daughter, or husband). For the family... this certainly won’t bring their boy back or ever erase knowing how brutally and frightened he was when he died. However, to do nothing will make his death completely meaningless. Maybe a drop of comfort can be felt if the family knew that this group of individuals couldn’t do it to another family.
