Time for Fecal Fest: Get Your Zoo Waste Now (Seattle)

Want some highly-coveted zoo poop? Yes? I sincerely hope you’re a gardener.

The Woodland Park Zoo is getting rid of its — err — natural fertilizer during its annual Fall Fecal Fest, and devoted gardeners can apply to take it off their hands. (Oh, gosh. I hope it’s not really on anyone’s hands.)

Starting Thursday, the zoo is accepting bids for Zoo Doo and Bedspread, two fertilizer products comprised of what’s left after zoo animals digest their meals.

Zoo Doo is produced by non-primate herbivores and works best with vegetables and annuals. Bedspread contains higher amounts of wood chips and sawdust and works as mulch for perennial beds and woody landscapes, according to zoo folks who know about this stuff.

Here’s how you get your hands on the stuff. (Again, I hope that’s not literally what happens.)

For a chance to purchase Zoo Doo or Bedspread, send in a postcard from September 1 through September 23 only. You can enter both the Zoo Doo and Bedspread drawings, but separate postcards are required: for Zoo Doo, mark your postcard “Zoo Doo.” For Bedspread, mark your postcard “B.S.” Entry cards will be selected randomly for as many entrants possible. Dr. Doo will contact the lucky drawn entries only.

By the way, zoo poop isn’t free:

Pick-up truck 8×4 bed: $60; 6×4 bed: $45; 6×3 bed: $35. Limit one full truck per person. Garbage cans: $8 to $10 depending on size; bags: $4 to $6 depending on size. Two-gallon and pint-sized buckets are available anytime at the ZooStores for $14.95 and $4.95, respectively.

For nearly a century, the Ringling Bros circus has played in NYC's Madison Square Garden each spring. One of the BIG problems is what to do with all the elephant poo.

About 20 years or so ago, when organic gardening first became popular..they came up with the brilliant idea to sell the stuff..elephant dung is GREAT fertilizer.

So, every day the circus is in town, you can see all these liberals with their rooftop gardens, drive their SUVs down into the loading docks under MSG, lay down a tarp, and PAY good money for elephant crapola..

I know people who get lion/tiger poo and put it around their property to keep the coyotes away, as fertilizer, nope.
And no they don’t have to pay for it, just haul it away.

I can’t believe that I am actually commenting on poop but here goes. I did read an article sometime back that wild animal poop is a great fertilizer BUT one must not spread the “fresh” poop on plants immediately. It has to “mellow” and decay for a good season. If I remember correctly, it had to do with the nitrogen level (?) and the fresh poop will actually burn plants. So.. there you go.

Anyhow the zoo is worthy of support and I hope they sell
all their doo. BTW I have a small supply of kittycat doo

However, the quality of the trolls lately has been so abysmal that we’re hurting for threads to sit in.

LOL!! I am laughing because the kids will ask when they get home from school, “So, what was on FR today?”. I said, “There was a very interesting article about zoo animal poop that people use for their gardens”. One of those “crickets, crickets” moments!

I have no idea if a llama counts as a wild animal. I remember the article especially detailing elephant poop and more of the zoo’s exotic animals. What we discuss on FR, right?!!! LOL!!

Tiger/Lion poo is great in the garden to keep the rabbits and coons away. It really works.
