I got involved with politics when Ronald Reagan was election President. I just turned 18. Mom and dad were both working class union types in the city of Chicago. Yeah, they voted Democrat. If they didn't they would not get new garbage cans yearly. I became a Republican Precinct captain that year and mom, dad, and I were the only Republicans in the whole precinct.
After serving on Reagan's Grace Commission Harry Figgie wrote the book "Bankruptcy 1995". I read it, and at the age of 25 and it scared the snot out of me. I started talking about this book and its conclusions to anyone who would listen. Friends laughed at me. The laughs were hearty, especially while these blue-collar and middle-management friends were making money between 1995-1999 buying every website that IPO'd themselves. They got pinched in the tech bubble, and then moved on.
Last year I was invited to speak at one of the biggest Tea Party events in Illinois. And here is what I said ... "we all knew this was going to happen. But we thought is was going to happen to our children and grandchildren. None of us are surprised at what is happening, we are surprised at the rate of speed at which it is happening." I also said that we were all like frogs simmering in water that was slowly getting warmer, and we were falling asleep.
Well, along comes Barack [the Empty Suit] Obama and he had a vision of change. Throw these sleeping frogs into a pot of boiling water. Thank you Mr. Obama, you have now awaken the "I-am-too-busy to be involved in the things that don't really affect me crowd" Maybe now with the energy of these people we can force the changes that are needed to take this country back to the height of greatness that reflects the greatness of her best people. Hail to Barack for awakening the great sleepers!
Got to find the “strawberry” somewhere, I guess.
Feeling good about a house burning down due to arson in order to rebuild a new one is like feeling good when you are able to escape an injury when you crash your car while driving DWI.
Do you really want to feel that good afterwards in learning your lesson when it was so preventable to begin with?
Depends on the timing. By the time the German people woke up to what was happening in the 30s, it was already too late.
Reminds me of the old cliche ‘be careful what you wish for you may just get it’. Well America got that hopey change it wanted but it wasn’t what they expected with the Pied Piper One.
Carter gave us Reagan...
I drive my car myself, I do not rely on 300 million Americans to drive it for me. And if I could elect the President instead of relying on 300 million Americans to do it this country would be in a little different shape
DUUUUDE, It’s the meds.
If we can survive until Nov 2012, I’m inclined to agree somewhat.
Liberalism has long been considered to be benign by most, I think there is great value in what Obama has done-he’s removed all doubt that liberalism is just plain wrong-headed and dangerous.
The Democratic Party and the Main-stream media may go down with him. Their bubble is being punctured by events, and words will not save them.
Too many actually believe there is no point in voting. cause the other side does not play fair.
Let us pray believing God's Word and be obedient to his commands. When we are disobedient ... we are chastised. We have a lot to repent of, immorality, abortion, homosexuality, failure to know God and love Him. Failure to seek to know Him.
Think about it ... we are without excuse for not knowing He is ...
Father open the hearts and eyes of those that do not know thee, bring them into the fold according to thy will. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven Forgive us our sins, in Jesus name and for his sake. Amen.
Reagan was already waiting in the wings.
There is NO Reagan waiting in the wings in 2012.

Was it, really? I think the famous Tytler quote sums it up nicely (even if Snopes says Tytler didn’t write it). I was aware of it in the early 1970’s.
People do what people do. This was inevitable. As the author said, the only open issue was the timing.
New meds?
This is sort of like running through a barn full of manure yelling “there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere” LOL but you do make a good point.
Better that we go through the pain and hammer this out now, rather than bequeathing it to our children and grandchildren.

Okay, I’m confused. You said you were 18 when Reagan was first elected President. That was November 1980. Then you said you were 25 when the book Bankruptcy 1995 was written. I just looked it up and that came out in 1992, 12 years later. Not to be nitpicky but you would be 30.
Great post - and true to boot. I can only speak for myself, but my family was never what you would call political. It’s only in the last few years that I actually started to pay attention with what was really happening politically. And it was definitely the last election that made that happen.
I’m sure there are other posters/lurkers that feel the same way.
Agreed. There was a point after Scott Brown won the 41st state where I thought Obamacare was dead and there would be a shift to the center left to save the party and the country. At that moment, I thought ‘phew, we dodged the bullet in this Democratic super majority’. Unfortunately for the country, they rammed through Obamacare and more, and we are going to suffer for many years.
The awakening of the people is a silver lining, but we still have suffered what could be a deathblow to our way of life in this country.
I was twelve when Johnson took the silver out of the coins. I understood then what was meant by “fiat money,” and I have been expecting the complete crash of the dollar ever since.
This is exactly what has to happen to pull our nation back from the brink. Too many of our sheeple trust the mainstream media to define the center which, in turn, keeps moving the center ever leftward to the point that they are now trying to define BO as slightly left of center or even centrist.
The entire media-academia-government establishment complex needs to be completely and thoroughly discredited. It will happen only when the country has suffered enough that we wake up.
