Charlize Theron and Ridley Scott tight-lipped on mysterious "Alien" prequel "Prometheus"
Comic-Con ^ | July 28, 2011 | N. Ehrbar

In presenting his new film, Prometheus, at Comic-Con, Ridley Scott was torn between building excitement for the presumed Alien prequel and keeping the project shrouded in secrecy.

“Ridley has been sort of very cryptically obtuse about everything, and he will probably kill us if we say too much about the movie,” screenwriter Damon Lindelof said. “If you were looking for answers, you came to the wrong place.”

Theron was equally circumspect. When asked if she could share any details about her character, Meredith Vickers, she replied, “No, I can’t, sorry. I’m just here to be pretty.”

One thing Lindelof did want to clear up, though, is that Prometheus is not really the Alien prequel people have been saying it is, even if the project originally started that way.

“Although there might be some familiar things from the Alien universe, this movie has a heart and mind of its own,” Lindelof said. Still, they’re not entirely unconnected: “If you’re a fan of the original film, there will be little Easter eggs in there for you to find,” Lindelof said.

Comic-Con panels are really more about whetting audience appetites than doling out details, and Scott, who appeared via satellite from Iceland, stayed true to that.

"There is the DNA of the original Alien. That's as far as it goes," the director said, teasing that a big question from the first two Alien movies will finally be answered. "In the last few minutes of the movie, you'll understand what I'm talking about."

One thing that was revealed in the footage was a lot of Theron’s skin, as one clip showed her exercising in next to nothing. “When I’m naked, I really like to do push-ups,” she joked.

Second story I've run across this week about a prequel to a classic sci-fi film. Apparently Hollywood has listened to the public's complaints about sequels.

Sigourney Weaver was an unknown when she came out as the lone human survivor. Casting a Hollywood big-shot in the leading role may just be a mistake. Theron did some decent work in movies like “Monster”, but just about everything else, including sci-fi, has SUCKED.

Brunettes rule the sci-fi roost.

There's a compliment in there somewhere.

Can’t say I’m really an expert on the “Alien” universe, but from what I understood from the last couple “Alien Vs. Predator” movie was that the “Aliens” were created and breed by the “Predators” as sort of an ultimate hunting challenge, but some escaped and started breeding out of control and exterminating any life on planets the ended up on. I’m not sure if they plan to keep this lore for the new movie, or if its a reboot that will restore “Aliens” to it’s roots and remove the “Predators” from the lore.

They could have far better success with this if they toned down the action and went back to the slower paced mood-suspense of the first movie. That is, less “Fast and Furious”, and more “Solaris”.

For instance, in the first movie, there is a sense of professionalism and business about the crew. They are basically a tugboat crew carrying a refinery and its ore. It is all on autopilot, and would have stayed that way, except for the ship getting an emergency signal. Nothing glamorous about it at all. The future is hard work.

Then, when they visit the crashed alien vessel, they get to see the first of H. R. Giger’s designs. His artistry is a major part of the movie, and totally captivated his audience.

Stuff like this is what truly distinguishes a movie. Like the set design for Gotham City in the original Batman, or the future Los Angeles in Blade Runner. It is interesting enough that on its own, you wouldn’t mind a travelogue just to see the sights.

Until the very moment when the nymph alien nails Caligula on the face, the movie is rather slow paced, and just sets the mood. And that is more than good, even without car crashes and fistfights.

If they could get that sort of thing in the prequel, it will be a hit.

AFAIK, the Aliens didn’t originate as creations of the Predators; however, the Predators did breed them for the purpose of giving them a good hunt/warrior ritual initiation.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting that photo of Charlize Theron. It's rather nice.

I'm going way out on a speculative limb here, but I would venture to say that Lazamataz would probably consider hitting that (or even just the the photo itself) although there's no way of knowing for sure without hearing from him directly. We all know how particular he can be...

This is the photo I'm referring to, Laz:

Laz would hit this
