Premiering Friday, June 24, 9PM e/p
When damage happens to one of the small boats, and the Bob Barker is five hours away, the crew realizes that they will have to spend a night at sea. But the crew is wet and freezing already, and early symptoms of hypothermia begin to set in.

Real Time Update:

Is rocker Ted Nugent really going to slay 20 whales?

Nugent Among the catchier Friday morning headlines: "Rocker Ted Nugent Tells Belmont Shore Patch Columnist He'll Kill 20 Whales."

That was followed by the subhed: "Controversial hunter-rocker modestly vows to slay the mammoth creatures this year."

Now for some perspective. The Patch.com story clearly was posted because of the sensational value of Nugent's claim. Of course the Motor City Madman, as fond as he may be of hunting down wild animals, isn't going to slay any whales.

The rocker/hunter/conservationist made the claim, jokingly, during the Thursday night debut of the Philip Friedman Outdoors radio show, which airs at 9 p.m. on AM 830.

Nugent, an ardent bow-hunter with outspoken beliefs on just about any topic, was asked what he thought about Capt. Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's annual efforts to harass Japanese whalers during their controversial hunts in the Antarctic region.

In other words, Nugent was goaded by Friedman, who knew the rocker does not have a filter and would provide entertaining sound bytes.

It might have surprised some, however, to hear that Nugent would side with the Japanese over minke whale hunts that are condemned by so many nations and individuals. The hunts are carried out in the name of research to get around a loophole in a global moratorium on commercial whaling.

Nuget claimed that minke whales are a renewable resource, like many land critters, and that if the Japanese like to eat whale meat they ought to be able to hunt the whales. (Minke whales are not endangered.)

Watson might counter that fewer Japanese are eating whale meat these days, that a lot of meat is wasting away in freezers and that whale meat contains high levels of mercury. That is, if Watson even cares about what an aging rock star might think about the way Sea Shepherd operates.

Friedman, of course, has extended an open invitation for Watson to appear on his show.

Those who missed the Nugent interview can hear it via this link.

The great thing about packet communications, even deep in the southern ocean, is that you can get a short text message through extremely quickly, even if conditions aren't fantastic (say, for example, when your satellite phone works like crud...)

It never ceases to amaze me how they'll write and issue press releases, then get frustrated that they can't even get a simple position ping from another vessel. I mean, I understand, it's super easy to sucker a contributor to pitch in for satellite telephone time - after all, Paul Watson has to have his statement/interviews while in the southern ocean - much harder to talk someone into popping for internet time.

Over and over again, there's location identification problems, basic direct commands that are unable to get through, all of which could easily be handled with off the shelf communication equipment for much less than what they blow in quick telephone calls ship to ship, or ship to boat which results in zero communications in the end.

One strafing run and this show would have been off the air quicker than “Hello Larry.”

I just got home (from shopping in a monsoon) and turned it on. Just in time to hear that lovely whine of the Gojira's engines quitting again. I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.

So you’re on a helicopter in the antarctic in the fog and you can’t communicate with your mother ship.

Is that bad?

So the little boat caught the big Maru? Sometimes the dog does catch the car and has no idea what to do with it.

If they have their GPS tracker on the boat, why bother with trying to prop fouling it? To a normal person, this would be a unnecessary risk, to Capt. Coco Puffs it seem great since it is not you life at risk.

Why not track it and get video of them actually killing whales. That would be more powerful IMHO.

I love the trivia question. Two of the ships’ captains started out as chefs in the galley. I think can see Admiral Chubby’s priorities when giving promotions.

I’m betting that’s the two guys who would sneak him a greasy burger and pork rinds while the rest of the crew was eating their vegies.

Hypothermia. What idiot leaves a bunch of their crew in a small boat in the antarctic FIVE HOURS from the nearest ship?
