The Mosin-Nagant Rifle - Why Don’t You Have One Yet?
Human Events ^ | 6-21-11 | Richard Johnson

If I asked you to tell me what was the most important rifle ever used in Russia, what would it be? Many people might answer: “the AK-47.”

However, it was the Mosin-Nagant rifle that drove Nazis from the Motherland. The same rifle guarded the Czars, and later deposed them.

The AK may be the Cold War face of the Evil Empire, but the Mosin-Nagant was the backbone of a country when their very survival was in doubt.

In a great twist of historical irony, the former Communist country is selling the rifles that guarded the revolution to the very citizens once considered her enemies.

History

Let me introduce you to the Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle. Adopted in 1891, the Three Line Rifle was first carried by Russian troops under Czar Alexander III. Later, the gun would be known as the Mosin-Nagant rifle.

I don’t have one only because I don’t want to deal with another rifle cartridge. It’s the same reason I never bought a .303 Enfield. I’ll stick with the 30-06 and .308.

many of these guns are surprisingly accurate, with many people reporting groups of 4” or less at 100 yards.

Absolutely true. Off hand.

"Even if you don’t do a lot of shooting, having one of these guns in your closet with a can of ammo is your responsibility. You never know when the king of England might come looking for back taxes."

I just happen to have one anyway, but it's not for that sort of thing.

Why don’t I have one yet?

Um... I can’t afford the cost of orthopedic surgeons for my shoulder?

What do I win?

Gotta love the Mosey-Nugget.

Reasonably accurate.

Hits hard, esp. with 174gr bullet.

Dirt cheap.

Ammo also dirt cheap.

Interesting piece of history.

What's not to like?

And good general forums on old bolt action rifles including the Mosin: www.surplusrifle.com (a butthead named dynachrome hangs out there, too.)

My M-38 cracked its stock, right behid the bolt, the first time I went to shoot it. I'm not certain what gave first, my shoulder, or the stock.

Cheaper than Dirt has a really nice aftermarket stock for about $60 (plus shipping) that takes a ton of the recoil out of it. It made it real nice to shoot.

I’ve got an M38 from 1943. It was used to slay National Socialists.
