Netgear CEO: Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, Android will overtake Apple
Mac Daily News ^ | Monday, January 31, 2011 - 09:16 AM EST

"The global chairman and CEO of home networking giant Netgear has launched into a scathing attack on Apple and its founder Steve Jobs, criticising Jobs's 'ego' and Apple's closed up products," Asher Moses reports for The Sydney Morning Herald. "At a lunch in Sydney today, Patrick Lo said Apple's success was centred on closed and proprietary products that would soon be overtaken by open platforms like Google's Android."

MacDailyNews Take: Patrick Lo is dead wrong. Here's why from someone who predicted the iPhone over 4 years before Steve Jobs unveiled it. What was the Patrick Lo doing in 2002? Making some of the world's crappiest routers. As usual.

Moses continues, "Lo said Apple's closed model only worked because, in many product categories like MP3 players, 'they own the market.'"

MacDailyNews Take: Why do they own the market, dummy? Hello?

Moses continues, "However, he said this was only a temporary state of affairs and pointed to the fact that Google's open-source Android platform for smartphones - which any manufacturer can use for free - recently overtook iPhone in market share in the US."

MacDailyNews Take: "A temporary state of affairs" that's going on a decade now, genius.

Moses continues, "'Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform,' said Lo."

MacDailyNews Take: Anyone who remotely understands what Steve Jobs means to the world, which, oh-by-the-way, includes delivering WiFi to the masses, without which there would likely be no Netgear, should have at least a bit of respect. Especially a dime-a-dozen CEO of a dime-a-dozen company that specializes in buggy routers. What's our standard response whenever we run into WiFi connection issues? "Netgear. Pure crap." It ought to be their company slogan.

Moses continues, "[Lo said] 'Ultimately a closed system just can't go that far ... If they continue to close it and let Android continue to creep up then it's pretty difficult as I see it.'"

MacDailyNews Take: That's the problem, you don't see it. Oh, for a natural inhibition that would give the visionless pause before critiquing the visionary.

Moses continues, "Lo also criticised Jobs's public thrashing of the Adobe Flash format, attributing it to his 'ego.' 'What's the reason for him to trash Flash? There's no reason other than ego,' he said. Asked if he had relayed any of his concerns about Apple's closed platform to Jobs, Lo said: 'Steve Jobs doesn't give me a minute!'"

MacDailyNews Take: Steve Jobs doesn't suffer fools and he's already explained quite clearly why he's sparing iOS users from Adobe's Flash.

Moses continues, "Never afraid to speak his mind, Lo also said Netgear had seen a boom in sales of its Wi-Fi network booster product due to the trend of people taking their iPads with them into the bathroom. The extenders are used to boost the wireless signal so it can reach other rooms."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: We wouldn't buy a Netgear product if you paid us ten times the asking price. They're just pieces of junk from a company headed by an ungrateful, tactless dimwit.

Wow. Sounds like someone hit a nerve.

Where's your usual "No personal attacks" disclaimer?

I've never had a problem with any Netgear product. In fact it's running most of my home network.

I’m an Apple fan, but the gap in user experience between the Android Tablet and the iPad is a fraction of what it is between Snow Leopard and Windows. That’s a reality that Apple is going to have to contend with, as Android tablets are available for around 60% of the cost of their iPad competitors while providing 95% of the functionality.

Too bad Android has all that stolen code in it.

They were so lazy they didn't even strip out the headers and obfuscate the variable names.

Keep repeating that and Apple will go away! (LOL)

They are not even close except that they both are tablets! Fun is part of the iOS xperience. Function is superior. Android will never be as good, they will continue to follow the leader!

lack of editorial objectivity makes this as useless as something from HuffPo or Kos.

Steve Jobs vision HAS been a major competitive factor for Apple, it would have been interesting to read a discussion of THAT.

I have actually had MUCH better luck with Netgear than with D-Link or Linksys products. When Lo says that Apple only has the portable mp3 market with the iPod because they already own it, he is overlooking the fact that mp3 itself is nearly as open as Android is, and that plenty of mp3 compatible products existed long before the iPod (I still have my Lexar, circa 2000, and Creative Labs had the Rio). The Lexar allowed swapping USB memory sticks, still a cool feature. Apple went into a growing market they didn't own, and proceeded to own it with everyone from Microsoft to Lexar and Creative taking a stab (not to mention Sony with their proprietary ATRAC system).

Years ago, Michael Dell stated that it was time for Apple to pack it in and fold up shop. Maybe he was trying to influence buyers and stores. Maybe he was engaged in wishful thinking. Business savvy and smart as he is, he was extremely wrong. The Netgear CEO taking the Lo road was uncharacteristically unAsian. Moreover, speaking like a Grand Mufti chiding others greater (in a business sense) than oneself makes one look like a small minded hypocrite.

Apple survived kicking Steve Jobs out once already. A wiser, mature Jobs returned, and actually improved on his previous performance. He has known about his failing health for some time, and when his time is up in 15 days or 15 years, his successors will be obliged to follow his approach as well as they are able. We won't get any Gil Amelios this time around. Visionary that he is, Jobs could not have turned the company around alone, and it thrived during his previous medical leave of absence. They are ready this time.

I'll likely buy Netgear products in the future, but I sure wouldn't want a business relationship with the likes of Mr Lo anytime soon. He has to mature just as Steve Jobs did.

Google and Apple’s competition simply copy Apple’s product ideas. Is there a market for these copy-cat’s? Sure.

Are these companies innovative? Not even close!

Apple spends the money on ideas, R & D and product development and then these other vultures slide in with their own version of Apple’s innovative products.

These vulture companies had better pray that Jobs and Apple continue on their innovative product development. Otherwise, how will they be able to “copy” Apple’s innovative products?

Not ONE of their products is an innovation, only a copy of Apple’s!

Excellent point. That is how I was introduced to Apple, through an iPod touch. It's an excellent product. And now Apple sells more digital music through iTunes than all physical CDs sold anywhere. It's an amazing accomplishment. But Apple did this through a superior product and user experience.

Too bad Android has all that stolen code in it. They were so lazy they didn't even strip out the headers and obfuscate the variable names.

So if a company manufactures an Android tablet or phone, does that mean they will have to pay an extra fee to Oracle to use the code? That might cut into their profits a bit.

The article contained an attack upon Steve Jobs, and the author of the article attacked the CEO of Netgear for so doing in return. The “no personal attacks” caveat applies to FReepers responding to the article and to one another. It doesn’t apply to the article. Neither Jobs nor the CEO of Netgear are FReepers or present on this thread to my knowledge. If either of them were, you’d have a point.

Meh. My Netgear router works just fine. And we have iPhones, a Mac Book Air, as well as several PC products scattered around the house.

Apple fanbois need to not get so bent out of shape when their living icon is criticized. Argue the points with facts.

What Android tablets? Do you have the model names and prices? The Samsung Galaxy Tab (7 inch) is smaller than the iPad and retails for $749.00. You can shop around and probably get $100.00 off that price. Does it have 95% of the functionality of the iPad? Nope.

The iPad starts at $499.00.
