Not exactly a book - but the “Ghost in the Shell” movie and 40 some odd episodes are fine work in this meme.

Another fun book that does start with a cataclysmic event is Roy Neuberger's
2020 Vision. (Follow my link! When I searched either by title or author Amazon didn't find it. Maybe I screwed up?) It helps to understand the thinking of an observant Jew when reading this one.

Geez - no one gave you a link to our own Jeff Head?
Dragon's Fury - World War Against America and the West: Following great success in the War on Terror, politicians and analysts alike thought that future global conflict was impossible...but they were wrong. Journey into a possible future where Islamic terrorists sharpen their horrific skills & ally with Red China. In such a future, can the U.S. & western civilization survive?
It's five volumes that you will not want to put down. Cheers.

I have not read Earth Abides but will look for it. I have read the other two and recommend them, especially Canticle for Leibovitz.
I also recommend
Larry Niven Lucifer’s Hammer
and
Steven King The Stand

Thaanks my friend. The whole thing is now available as a single hardback volume of close to1000 pages of small print...much more economical for my readers that way.
Folks can download the entire thing as an ebook for free...I just ask if they like it to please buy the hardback afterwards.
