Teen Struck By Lightning Standing In Garage

A teenager was recovering from a lightning strike that happened while he stood inside his own garage on Wednesday afternoon.

Stephon Owens, 15, was just about to push a button on the garage door opener when a surge of electricity shot through the house on Bell Meade drive in Douglas County, his parents told Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips.

“They came in here to put the basketball hoop together and ….and that’s when it went through his arm,” said Sabrina Bryan, Owens' mother.

The teenager and his father were working to assemble a basketball net when the storm moved through, according to Bryan.

"It happened so fast. It was just an instant. Just to see the look in his eyes and hear him scream" said Richard Bryan, Owens' father.

Owens suffered no burns or scarring, according to his mother, and was released from the hospital on Thursday."I feel extremely blessed. I mean God left me on this earth. He could have just as easily taken me away so that I could have died," Owens told Channel 2 Action News reporter Diana Davis.

Neighbors living on the street said they saw the storm and then the lightning.

“A big thunder with a big beam. A big white beam of light that went through from the east all the way to the west. When it happened I left my master suite, came downstairs and told my kids to turn off the whole lights in the house,” said Cy Amadi

My first thought! How did he get the lightening to do that? And what happened to the requirement that people be literate before they are allowed to write headlines?

I agree...but you should probably learn how to spell "lightning" before you throw too many stones.

We had two teenage girls killed by lightning in my county not 10 miles from where this teen was struck.

We’ve had those afternoon pop up tstorms all week...and they’ve produced some spectacular lightning shows. Knocked out our power about 4 hours last night.

Lightning is something I respect. If you hear thunder, lightning could strike at any time.

Take to the indoors and unplug the computer, flatscreen, etc.

Our roof, siding, air conditioning unit took it bad in our area last Saturday. It was the 3” hail that did the damage, but always beware the lightning.

Perhaps he wasn't actually struck, but simply had the $#%+ scared out of him?

Good points raised on the headline verbage.

As for the teen that was in the garage and got hit by lightening, I’m wonder what is the big surprise here. You can get hit by lighting while in the basement.
