MARINA DEL REY, Calif.A 16-year-old Southern California girl attempting to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone has rounded Cape Horn on the southern tip of South America. Abby Sunderland is believed to be the youngest person to sail alone around Cape Horn, known for treacherous winds and waves.
Sunderland says on her blog that she didn't get to see the cape because she was some 50 to 60 miles offshore as she crossed from the Pacific Ocean into the Atlantic.
Sunderland embarked five months after older brother Zac completed a westerly solo circumnavigation at the age of 17.

In spite of the modern gizmos available to these young adventurers, they are still awesome characters. Great stories.
Did you also follow her brother Zac on his voyage?
1 of 7 kids in the family. Brave brave girl. I would not want to go around Cape Horn in a cruise ship.
You Go, Girl! :)
Indeed. Jessica also amazes me, considering the bad beginning she had... crashed her boat the first or second day out, I believe.
I was on the edge of my seat when her brother Zac was doing this, but when they got serious about Abby sailing, I just wanted to cover my eyes!! Now, I peek through my fingers a little bit.
Shows the difference between their confidence and my lack of same:)
Waaaay cute........:-)
Yeah. That kind of accomplishment deserves a little ‘sparkle.’ :)
Happy Easter to you and yours, Diana:-)
Even on a destroyer (long, long ago), it's an "interesting" area. We exited the Beagal Channel westward about breakfast time, and immediately hit 40-foot seas.
The baskets are ready...just waiting for Husband and Son to get engrossed in a movie or playing the wii tonight...and then The Easter Bunny can swoop in to fill the baskets. I'm having onehelluvatime staying out of the Cadbury Eggs tonight, LOL!
It is fairly easy going from the Pacific to the Atlantic since the current is in that direction. What is hard is going from the Atlantic to the Pacific against the current. This current is roughly 8 or 9 miles per hour.
When I traveled from east to west on the Triton we had difficulty maintaining depth doing 15-18 kts. The day we did it the weather was supposedly calm.
Happy Easter to you and yours, (((Conor.))) It is Sunday morning in Jerusalem!!!
Geez, i won’t even let my teenager drive the car to the nearest big town:)
