THE MOMMY FILES: Is it cruel to put a 5-year-old boy in pink bib tops?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/30/9 | Amy Graff

Posted on 12/30/2009 5:41:49 PM PST by SmithL

When my husband was 7 years old, his family went to Kauai. He forgot to pack his swimsuit for the trip and his dad and stepmom punished him for his forgetfulness (because 7-year-olds are so forgetful) by forcing him to wear his skivvies to the beach.

My husband must have been emotionally scarred by the incident because he tells this story often, and not to make people laugh, but as an example of child cruelty.

He's extremely sensitive about how I clothe our own son, and I, the unaccredited psychologist, think it might be somehow linked...

His uncomfortableness with our son wearing clothing that he considers "funky" or "weird" or "girlish" came out again last night when I pulled a trash bag filled with our ski clothes from the garage. (We're going to the snow next month.)

We haven't been to the snow in over two years, so the children's ski clothes were small. My 5-year-old son had outgrown the bib tops he wore when he was 2. But when I came across the powder-puff pink snowsuit our 4-year-old daughter had worn, my eyes lit up.

Our son is a small 5-year-old who can definitely fit into these, I thought.

My husband read my mind, and sternly said, "Our son is NOT wearing those."

I can't say that I was surprised by his reaction because, as I've already said, he has a history with shunning outfits I pick out for our son. But I was frustrated.

I have this pie-in-the-sky progressive attitude that we shouldn't force gender stereotypes on our children. I don't want to lock them into a gender cage, telling them that blue is only for boys and pink only for girls.

I can not think of any good reason to put those on a 5-year old boy. Other than leftist, PC, pro-Homo craziness.

My wife and I have five children - three boys and two girls (not in that order; oldest and youngest are girls and three middle are boys). With decisions like this, my wife is in charge of the girls and I'm in charge of the boys. Too easy; does it warrant a news article? Only in San Francisco would this be a topic of discussion.

My son says that the middle finger means nothing, and I agree. However, society says that it means "F*** You!" Should we........ Just kidding, of course. But it does illustrate how silly this conflict is.

Um, no. A normal 5 year old boy would also emphatically say NO! No, no, no, no way.

*"Gak."* Do SanfranSickies really talk this way?

OH and btw, Amy Graff is a child sex abuser, attempting to pervert her son into a transvestite or worse.

I can hardly get past your “we’re going to the snow” line.

I live in Ohio.

Ohio boys never wear pink.

Even my DOGS are self-actualized enough to know their own gender. I am sure anyone who has ever had pets know just what I mean.

A 5 year old boy knows perfectly well that HE is a BOY.

if she was so “progressive” why didn’t she use unisex colored clothing for her oldest daughter? I’m a frugal person by nature...and bought mostly primary colored outdoor clothing and pants for my oldest who’s a boy. Most of his clothes easily passed down to my youngest who’s a girl. It’s probably good that I also detest pink on lil girls lol

I have to believe that if a who is 40 or 50 years old recalls an incident from when he was two or three that it made enough of an impression to still be affecting his emotional life! Probably true even if he’s only 25 or 30!

I am 67-years-old now and several things that happened to me when I was under three that are still with me. One was surgery on my foot after I stepped on a sewing needle and it broke off in my foot. I remember vividly several attempts under a fluoroscope machine to remove the needle. Another was when I had a cap pistol and was clicking it, no caps, and Mom told me to stop. I clicked it again, she snatched it from my hand and threw it out the window of our moving car.

I figure those incidents, and a couple of others I recall, must still have some hold on me or I wouldn’t recall them!

However, I don’t know that putting me in a pink top would have had the same effect.

I read the article. The woman is an idiot.

The suit is not only very pink it has flowers and a heart on it.

That was the first thing I thought of after reading the post.

If anybody takes any photos of the poor kid on the slopes he’ll never live it down.

Times call for frugality.

Dye the outfit dark blue, and remove any feminine ornamentation.

Pink dress and polo sirts are seen worn by adult men all the time. Fox anchors wear pink. Madras is pastel, made a come back and worn by males of all ages. Golfers... well we won't go there with what some have been seen to wear on the course.

The husband has deeper identity issues..see a shrink. However, I would suggest another color of bib top for a young lad in this case,,but if that is all you have....substance over style. Could add NRA patches to the knees, might help keep bullies away. Builds character!

Ted Knight...in Pink.

That's what I did, particularly winter clothes. Our girl, the oldest, wore a lot of T-shirts that were passed along to our son. With winter outer garments I was particularly careful to buy unisex colors.
