Verizon has launched a new ad for the Motorola Droid, "Pretty."
Electronista reports, "The new spot directly attacks the iPhone and calls Apple's handset a 'digitally clueless pageant queen,' making fun of its focus on style and even mocking the glass case Apple used to display the phone at its launch in 2007."
MacDailyNews Take: Focus on style? Just because iPhone has style, doesn't mean that Apple focuses on it. If anything, Apple focuses on the apps available for iPhone. Something with which, along with style, the brick heavy Droid simply cannot compete.
Electronista continues, "It meanwhile thrives on the Droid's powerful, masculine image and, among other things, suggests that the smartphone is 'racehorse duct-taped to a Scud missile fast.'"

MacDailyNews Take: If Verizon has decided that the best way to compete with iPhone is to weakly try and fail to emasculate it, then Verizon is clueless, desperate, fearful, and stupid.

Besides Verizon's and Motorola's obvious issues, this is really a poor marketing strategy. The geniuses at Verizon are basically saying, "Hey, you 51% of the U.S. population who are female, these aren't the Droids you're looking for." What's next, Verizon, marketing Droid only to blue collar men? Way to minimize your own addressable market, dummies. By the way, you 51% of the U.S. population who are female plus all of the men who can recognize a complete platform with a vibrant ecosystem vs. yet another device fighting over Apple's table scraps in the quest to become the SanDisk of smartphones, the iPhone 3GS is for you. The "S" is for speed.
Unless Verizon is looking to deliver highly-targeted Viagra and Enzyte ads, the only other thing we can think of is that maybe Verizon subconsciously wants Droid to fail, so they'll be forced to finally wake up, forget about their craptastic V-Cast and dreams of other proprietary over-priced, under-featured services, and sign on Steve Jobs' dotted line like they should have in the first place.
Apple should, and likely will, ignore these ads, since they're not stupid like Microsoft.
And, a Scud missile is an inaccurate Soviet Cold War-era lumbering piece of junk deployed by North Korea, Syria, Sadam Hussein's Iraq, and other tremendous examples of technologically-advanced global powerhouses. In other words, when a Scud doesn't blow up on the pad, meander off-course, or disintegrate in flight, it's slow. And duct-taping a 1,200 lb. horse to it certainly isn't going to make it any faster.
I wish I had checked 3g coverage before I got our AT&T I-Phone. Not good! Verizon much better!

I like Apple’s stuff, but I like Verizon in this fight. They have always been good to me and never had any problems.
I am glad they are getting the DROID and are not handicapping it like previous phones. It will be actually open.
I have heard great things about the DROID so far, and it can only make the iPhone better.
Look at the real 3G coverage map (not the crap map AT&T is using in its ads with that has-been actor that is ANY KIND OF COVERAGE WHATSOEVER), and Verizon kills AT&T, period.
I am not sure if this approach was a good one for Verizon. But, it’s past ads on this have been spot-on no matter what AT&T claims.
One problem that Verizon won’t tell you - in most places, VZ’s ‘3G’ is actually slower than AT&T’s ‘2G’ service.
I don’t follow, how could that be....?

In addition, Verizon’s coverage map is... somewhat optimistic. I service a client that has several field reps and engineers, and right now they’re all using ATT’s wireless net for field communications. About once every year or so, I send out field reps with competitors’ cards/services to see about coverage in the field; and every time they report problems with them.
If you want usable coverage everywhere, ATT is pretty much the only choice. Verizon is slower than they promote it as being and it has many, many, many holes.
With Verizon’s CEO stating that they ‘might’ be selling iPhones 3Q10; it seems ‘stupid’ to be bashing them now. Because, when they bash them now, they look like jealous children; if they sell then later they will look like liars.
Verizon’s marketing team needs to find a job working in the Climate prediction industry - as they are utterly incompetent at selling phones.
It’s because Verizon’s service is the 3rd Generation of the much older and slower CDMA technology and ATT is using the 2nd and 3rd generation of the newer/faster GSM standard.
I’ve said this before on many threads about the iPhone. I am an Apple user but I have to use Verizon for my mobile phone service because no other carrier gives a signal at my residence as well as my cabin.
I waited a long time for Apple to come to their senses and switch to Verizon. When the Droid came out it was enough to make me wait no longer. Having had it for two weeks (returned one the second day I had it because it was defective) I have to say it is everything they advertise it to be.
Family members of mine have the iPhone and love it. Nobody can compete with Apple for total product integration, but Verizon/Motorola/Google have produced a very competitive alternative to the iPhone/ATT. The fact that Verizon runs circles around ATT probably makes the Droid a smarter purchase at this time. But...
Apple seems to always be one step ahead of the competition and when they finally produce a product to compete with an Apple product, Apple outflanks them with a new product. Watch for the iTablet to do just that. Latest rumor is it will be announced in January to ship in early summer...AND priced well below what the industry expects.
One other thing; on Verizon’s ‘3G’ service, you can’t do two things at once - for example, you can’t take a call and continue to browse the web. There simply isn’t multiplexing ability and there’s not enough bandwidth on their network.
Meanwhile, I’m talking to my father on my iPhone 3G while looking up prices on Botach Tactical’s website and checking the weather report. 3G GSM does let you talk and surf simultaneously.

That’s the whole point of the Verizon ads attacking AT&T and pointing out the comparison of 3G coverage.
Verizon is tons better and covers many areas AT&T does not, particularly rural areas or small towns that AT&T just leaves out to dry.
If you drive in the middle of nowhere, the only place to get service often is with Verizon.
AT&T is getting better and gradually improving their map, and if I were to move back to Kansas I would be more likely to have 3G coverage everywhere I am most likely to go.
However, if I took the off-beaten path, Verizon (because of the Alltel network) would likely give me 3G even in areas where AT&T’s didn’t.
Thus, the scales are still tipped in Verizon’s favor I think.
And in all of this, the VERY BEST AT&T can do is point out a map in an ad showing generic “coverage” by AT&T.
This “coverage” is NOT just 3G but basically any kind of signal whatsoever.
AT&T is extremely misleading in their own ads here because people have seen the Verizon ads and assume AT&T is claiming 3G in all those areas. AT&T should sue themselves instead of Verizon.
Regardless, they will lose the court battle over the Verizon ads.
Um, actually, my field reps are often in the middle of nowhere and they’re usually the only people in the room with usable signal.
And they’re all on ATT.
Crap. My home and my vacation home must be the only two places that ATT doesn't have coverage. < /sarcasm>
Well that's not quite true, my son and daughter who have ATT and live in Baltimore have crap coverage just about everywhere they go. My daughter switched to Verizon but my son has an iPhone so is just living with the lousy coverage, but is not a happy camper.
On the other hand, I have never found anywhere that I have been that I did not have coverage with Verizon.
That is technically correct.
You can’t be on the internet while placing a phone call with Verizon because of the CDMA network. However, they are upgrading the network to a newer standard.
In addition, the iPhone couldn’t for a long time either. I find it a weakness of Verizon, but seriously....I could hang up the phone for a second to find the info and call them back.
The iDon’t still doesn’t let you use multiple apps in one time, while the Verizon Droid does.
