Soviets to Communize eastern Poland
In Occupied Poland... Nikita Krushchev (Secretary of the Ukrainian Communist Party) announces the “Communisation” of eastern Poland.
In Germany... The Reichstag is summoned to meet on Friday, October 6th.
In Ireland... U-35 lands the 28-man crew of the torpedoed Greek transport, SS Diamantis, on the Kerry coast, in the southwest.
In Britain... Members of the Glamorgan Agricultural Committee met to voice concerns about “gossip and goings-on” between Land Army girls and soldiers billeted around the farms in the area. A strict 9 o’clock curfew was urged for the girls, aged 17 to 40. Alderman David Davis defended the women, saying: “They are good-looking English girls with the right spirit. Good girls do not need looking after.”
I’m just not up to posting Eleanor this morning. It’s hard to believe the US citizenry was exposed to that mindless babble for so many years...

Diamantis SS, Capt Pateras, a Greek merchant ship of 4.990 tons, carrying 7.700 tons of manganese from Freetown, West Africa to Barrow-in-Furness, UK was torpedoed on October 3rd, 1939 by the German U-boat U-35 (Capt Werner Lott) 40miles west of Scillies, off Lands End. As the weather was very rough, the U-boat warned the crew (by firing a gunshot) of the sinking. The crew of 28 panicked and went to the lifeboats. In the heavy seas, they all overturned. Capt. Werner Lott then amazingly managed to pick them all up. Then 3 torpedoes were launched and Diamantis sank in 20 minutes. The crew was landed by U-35 at Ventry Harbour, Dingle Bay, Ireland on October 4th, 1939. This noble action enjoyed worldwide attention in the media, but Capt. Werner Lott, was reprimanded by the U-Boat command for putting his U-Boat and crew in danger and breaching Ireland’s neutrality. November 29th, 1939, U-35 was sunk by the British, off Norway. The crew of U-35 was equally picked up by the British destroyers. More info on: http://www.u-35.com

(Lots of stuff here)
Not long on profundities, was she. One thing I noticed from yesterday was her mention of a series of concerts in New York sponsored by ASCAP to allay the gloom of war. I remember posting a times story about that but now I can't find it. Maybe someone else can place it.
Including the New York Times. Read all about it tomorrow.
And haven't we established that Admiral Scheer was not in the Atlantic at this time and that it was Graf Spee which sank Clement (See image #7)?
She was the originator of the “It’s For The Children®” meme, I suspect.
I assume a relative of Lee Radziwill's husband.
Baseball players hawking cigarettes?!?!?!?!
That is correct. The Spee and the Scheer were very similar in silhouette, so such a mistake is understandable. And, IIRC, the Kriegsmarine was deliberately trying to confuse which ships were where, even to the extent of sending fake radio traffic. It's been a while since I've read Dudley Pope's book, so I'm not for sure about that.

You've seen the ads where they used doctors to promote the health benefits of cigarettes, haven't you? I'll try to remember to look for some later. I've got to get ready for church now.
Yes! Found it!

Pepsi was still promoting health benefits. I know they stopped that by the 50’s.
Another point about “commerce raiding” by surface ships. The Scheer, Lutzow and Spee were designed for that role. Other ships were sent out also, notably the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. But Hitler was afraid to risk them very much, because the prospect of them being sunk would be a propaganda coup for Churchill.
So the money and men spent on the surface ships would have been more effective if Hitler had built more U-boats instead.
It could very well have been decisive. Churchill always said he was more afraid of the U-boat menace than anything else.
Class even on a Sunday?
(But thanks)
Reading the speech of “Glasgow Laborite” George Buchanan, I reached the conclusion that Pat had to be related to him.
