Pie makers and jack-o'-lantern carvers may want to nab a pumpkin while they can. A cool summer in Minnesota, and much of the Midwest, could result in fewer pumpkins for sale this fall at farmers' markets and retail outlets.
"It was too cold of a summer. The heat wasn't there," said John Blonigen, who grew about an acre of pumpkins this year on his 6-acre vegetable farm near Paynesville. He sells to local retail outlets. Instead of the usual four to five pumpkins on a vine, he's seeing two to three.
"I don't know if there's going to be enough for everyone," said Blonigen, who countered his concerns in true Lake Woebegone fashion. "But it's not too bad. I've seen worse."

Ping...
I think it’s going to be a very bad winter for ACORNs too!
Tsk. That global warming again.
They’re already selling pumpkins at Krogers. Won’t they just get them somewhere else?
;-)
+1
I saw pumpkins in Sam’s Club for 9 bucks.
I give mine away but I can tell everyone what a great deal they’re getting, LOL.
I noticed the sparse pumpkin patch at the veggie ranch down the road from me too. (Michigan)
They had a bad year for tomatoes too.
It’s Minnesota, raise taxes on the rich and guarantee pumpkins for all for crying out loud.
Oh yeah? Well I just ate a cantalope picked from the vine here in frosty Minnesota. Not only that, but I picked apricots from my orchard and am now in the process of harvesting walnuts, black walnuts, buart nuts and butter nuts. All that from a place just outside the metro cell.
I struggled with tomatoes this year. No rain early and no sun late.....
We’re swimming in them. What the heck are they doing trying to grow pumpkins on the tundra in the first place? ;)
A lot of people had to re-plant because of our cool spring, but they’re coming on hot and heavy, now.
I saw locally grown pumpkins in the grocery today, MONSTERS for $5 and based on that price, it means there’s a glut of them in the area. I’m getting mine this weekend at the garden center along with corn stalks, edible squash, pie pumpkins, hay bales, gourds and fancy pumpkins.
I love Fall, but I’ll be d@mned if I’ll cook down a pumpkin for pie when I can buy a can of the stuff for 49 cents, LOL!
Just like the DC traffic stopper for a bit of the greens....
You did well.
Paging AlGore, Paging AlGore... please explain this to the uneducated (because of sucky public schools) masses how this could possibly be. After all, you are the one with all the climate educati....uh... what?
All my rowdy FRiends are out tonight......
;-)
That almost looks like a Terry Redlin painting!
It’s my ‘weekend.’ I get Thur-Fri off each week. Gotta make the most of it! :)
Yeah, cool summer, but it’s been a great Fall so far!
