A woman trying to smash a penny on the tracks was hit by a train Thursday night.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene at River Road and Idaho Street in Sedamsville just after 8 p.m.
They say the woman in her 20s suffered a minor head injury and was walking around when crews arrived.
She was taken to the hospital for observation.

As a kid, I did that a number of times, but I was clever enough to be a few hundred feet away when the train came.

Not me...
There wasn't a train in sight...when we placed pennies on the tracks...
Now I do have a story about hitting a train in a car once though.....of course that was when I was an older "wiser" HS student.

Rogue train must have swerved off the track momentarily.

I, too, did some crazy things involving trains when I was a kid.

There wasn't a train in sight...when we placed pennies on the tracks...I had some relatives that lived near some tracks and when visiting one summer, about all there was to do in that small town was see how long we could walk the rail, put pennies on the tracks and watch the seemingly rare train go by.
Whenever I put a penny on the track, it just disappeared once the train went by. So, I somehow decided putting the penny down in front of the oncoming train was the thing to do. Several times I darted out undeterred by horn blasts, each time closer and closer in hopes of recovering the penny. As I think about it, the last time I was awfully close.

how hard is it to not get hit by a train? You don't even need to be that far back from the tracks. Interestingly enough, as a kid watching trains go by, when a freight train was flying by and you were standing near the track, there was a sensation like being drawn into the train.

...the woman in her 20s suffered a minor head injury... She should sue. The train was grossly negligent.

I grew up in the sticks of Florida where there was nothing for us to do as kids other than watch each other sweat in the humidity. So we spent a lot of time near the very busy RR tracks. We crushed pennies (on the rare occaision when we had one) but we'd crush anything we could find. I won't elaborate.
We'd also jump on slow moving trains leaving a local lumber yard, ride them 8-miles to the next town then jump off. We were also stupid enough to play another potentially deadly game; chicken. We'd stand on the tracks while a train approached and see who had the nerve (or stupidity) to be the last to jump out of the way. The passenger trains at night, horns blasting, were the trickiest. I can only imagine the level of fear we must have put in the minds of those poor engineers.
