ORLANDO, FLA. A number of guns are off the streets in Central Florida following the annual Kicks for Guns event.
In Orlando, this is the 10th year for the event that allows residents to turn in guns, no questions asked, and get shoes or gift certificates in return for the gun.
Police said 108 guns were removed from the streets in yesterday's event. Two of them were connected to crimes.
Daytona Beach also held the event this year and took in 300 guns. The city of Palm Bay in Brevard County decided to try the event this year and collected 133 guns. That number was far past their expectations and they ran out of gift cards to trade for the guns by mid afternoon.
The Kicks for Guns event was started 10 years ago by Orlando radio station WTKS-FM 104.1 following the shooting at Columbine. It has grown every year and is responsible for getting thousands of guns off the streets of Central Florida.
BTW, they aren't guns. Guns are crew served. They are firearms or weapons.

Just how do they know these guns were on the streets? Were they just lying around waiting for someone to pick them up?
These programs have got to be one of the worst ideas ever. They do no good and do a bit of harm.
Huh, wonder if the police would appreciate that? ;)
Just a way for all the gangstas to get ride of old weapons and get a free set of kicks. All those firearms will be replaced with newer ones within a week. ;-)
I find nearly impossible to believe that such an assertion could be made in less than 24 hours. But let's give the big benefit of the doubt. Presumably all 108 guns were tested in the same manner and then matched against a database and two came up as "connected to crimes." That essentially means that 106 were not. How is this some effort of extraordinary good?
How much do they pay. I have a broken old 12 ga. single shot I was going to throw away.
The only way they could match up a gun to a crime would be if the serial number was on a list of stolen weapons, and not that the gun was ever used in a crime. I’ll bet the owner never gets that gun back.

Hang it on your wall as a “dummy” or “bait” gun. If someone breaks in they would steal it first and maybe miss your good ones hidden elsewhere.
I have several junk guns hanging on the wall just for this purpose.
But thousands of illegals are still there.
Like most leftist things, it is better to do something that makes you feel good than actually accomplish something.
Yep, if someone turned in a gun for a pair of shoes, there is a good chance the gun was stolen. This kind of crap promotes burglary, as the hoodlums can get something for something they stole with no questions asked.
yep! and the lame stream media thinks crew served implies some IRA job.
The idiots in Dallas and Fort Worth did the gun turn-in thing on Saturday. I only saw the 5pm news, so don’t know how many they collected. ....In return, the person was given a $50 gift card good at a grocery store, and one black woman was on camera saying they were going to have steaks tonight.
This stupid campaign doesn’t get the guns of the criminals, but usually only the old inoperable guns that have been passed down from “granddad” or those stolen from break-ins.
One thing you can bet on?
Criminals- who need guns as tools of their trade- didn’t turn their working pieces in...
So you REALLY think they can cross-match hundreds of randomly acquired guns in less than 24 hours? You’ve been watching too much CSI. LOL!
then why do they call it a 21-gun salute?
in new york city you get $200 for any gun you turn in. it has to be operable though.
That lets out ole Betsy. She has had it.
