At the White House press briefing today, left-wing Air America radio talk show host Bill Press asked Robert Gibbs, "Is there anything you can say that will make the birthers go away?"
To which Gibbs replied, Oh, please, please don't make me talk about an issue that makes conservatives look like a bunch of nutjobs.
I paraphrase. You can read the full exchange after the jump.
But I thought it was curious that Helen Thomas seemed to think that concerns that Obama is not really a U.S. citizen are legitimate (some of the following exchange was left out of the official White House transcript, but see the 30:50 mark of this video):
GIBBS: ... no, nothing will assuage them. But there are 10,000 more important issues for people in this country to discuss, rather than--
HELEN THOMAS: A violation of the Constitution.
GIBBS:--whether or not the President is a citizen. ...
THOMAS: Why do you think it keeps coming up?
MR. GIBBS: Because for $15, you can get an Internet address and say whatever you want.
You will need to turn the sound way up but
HELEN THOMAS does respond “A violation of the Constitution”.
You recently posted a thread about Helen Thomas. I thought you might find this interesting.
Not sure what to make of this “birther” controversy, but the change in that soldier’s orders last week, sure has piqued my curiosity.
We’re in trouble if only an old-school journalist like Thomas asks the obvious question before launching into a diatribe about how stupid anyone asking it is - “where’s the paper?” We’ve heard a couple of weeks of strident derision now without the answer to that most basic of questions. It isn’t American journalism’s proudest moment.
Ms. Thomas has no problem finding her birth certificate, since a stone tablet with cuneiform is tough to misplace.
I had to look it up. Helen Thomas turns 89 next month. Methuselah, look out. What the heck is she still doing working?
Helen Thomas (born August 4, 1920)
I’m not sure what he’s hiding, but my gut says it’s something.
I have always believed he was born in HI but I think he was illegitimate so he created a life story to hide that fact. Now the coverup of something so trivial, as it always does, is worse than the original problem.
Interesting that Helen Thomas asks about the Constitution.

Isn’t that how government usually works? [/cynic]
~snort~
Interesting.
Maybe we should declare a moratorium on Helen Thomas jokes for awhile...
She’s a columnist now, it’s basically like retirement, but she gets out of the house sometimes.
changing that officer’s orders to eliminate his “standing”......was a huge red flag
has anything like this ever occurred, especially during during wartime, when a CinC cancelled an officer’s deployment orders wit no repercussions (except to ruin his civilian contractor job) and quietly and rapidly- rather than produce his bona fides to a judge
I agree. KInd of like your mother saying something at a party with bad timing, but is right on the money. I mean this lady said something clearly that is on everyone’s mind.
Let’s support her.
TYhe soldier’s orders getting changed says it all. Obama blinked.
She smells blood in the water.
Thank GOD no one posted her picture again!
