According to this item from The Times of London, a survey of secondary students in Great Britain (age 11 to 16) revealed that many could not identify Auschwitz -- even though Holocaust studies are part of the national curriculum.
The Times cites a poll of students done by the British Press Association.
It found that "about 10% were not sure what it [Auschwitz] was, 8% thought it was a country bordering Germany, 2% thought it was a beer, the same proportion said it was a religious festival and a further 1% said it was a type of bread."

German schoolchildren and Japanese school children would also not be able to answer a lot of obvious questions about WW2.
school curricullum in denial.
I know he's gonna have a field day with this one... If only the mods stop screening the zots and then tossing them. Who knows how many hillarious posts about Irish devil worshipers, doku drums, JFK, Bush and others we are missing out on!
The children are taught nothing of The Berlin Airlift or The Marshall Plan, either.
Oh, those terrible Americans!
Reason #412341 to homeschool.
We were when I was there just a little over 10 years ago...
That’s Ok.
Most British schoolkids likely cant identify Britain these days either.
I don’t think an 11 year-old child necessarily needs to know about Auschwitz yet. JMHO. A 16 year-old should know, though...
Give British Islamification a couple more years and British schoolkids won’t be able to admit that the Holocaust happened at all.
But they CAN identify the needs of trans-sexual 6th graders!
I thought Britain stopped teaching about the Holocaust to asuage the Muslims.
Had to remove that part of the curriculum so the students could bow to Mecca five times a day.
Good. Was it positive toward the Americans?
Maybe they cannot tell the difference between Auschwitz and the national health clinics.
Identify Auschwitz? It’s a minor miracle today when a public school student can even pick out his own country on an unmarked map, which is much more difficult than finding Auschwitz (Auschwitz is found wherever large groups of liberals get together!)

Betcha they can tell you where Tenerife, Ibiza, and Corfu are, though. ;)
These are fifth graders in the States. I think every child that age should know at least some of what happened during the second world war. There is an age appropriate book my daughter read for the fifth grade called Number the Stars. It is not gruesome. It deals with a family escaping to Denmark and then leaving Denmark when the Germans took over. It is the perfect opening for a much needed discussion. Children can handle this information and need to be taught it. You add the graphic details as they get older
Big deal! The current President of the United States couldn’t identify Aushwitz either. He claimed his uncle helped liberate it, but it was the Soviets who did that.
