A "Psychological" Optical Illusion:
Eyes and Vision ^ | 09 Feb 2009 | Eyes and Vision

The influence of culture and environment can have an effect on our visual perception. This theory was first explored by Robert Laws, a Scottish missionary working in Malawi, Africa, during the late 1800's. Take a look at the picture below. What you see will largely depend on where you live in the world. After you have examined the picture, scroll down for a more detailed explanation.

So What Did You See?

What is above the woman's head? When scientists showed a similar sketch to people from East Africa, nearly all the participants in the experiment said she was balancing a box or metal can on her head. In a culture containing few angular visual cues, the family is seen sitting under a tree. Westerners, on the other hand, are accustomed to the corners and boxlike shapes of architecture. They are more likely to place the family indoors and to interpret the rectangle above the woman's head as a window through which shrubbery can be seen.

Actually it only shows how people interpret a two dimensional representation of a three dimensional world, based on pre-conceived ideas. Not exactly rocket science.

...::democrat view on:: poor, suffering people who can’t afford chairs or long pants. Not a single one is working, thus, they all need democrat solutions. The only person who does have a chair is a man, thus representing a repressive view. ::democrat view off::

And if you look at it you can see the woman resting her hand on her ankle... or are her hands tied behind her back...?

I see people gathered in a room, a window, a moldy corner that reminded me of the movie, The Ring. Oh, and I'm Indian. What's the diagnosis?

Optical illusion… read the words between the blocks. If you can’t read it, just get off your chair and try reading it a metre (or two) away from the screen.

The accomplice seated in the chair with his hand on the gun between his legs has relaxed, as his partner with the pit bull is bringing another hostage into their compound. /sarcasm

You read things differently based on your experience. It’s not just 2d either. Imagine an M1A1. Think of the pride you have in that American equipment. Now, imagine the guy inside it is p!ssed at you. It’s a whole different world.

I am from a glorious Third World culture.

I see the family as getting ready to eat the delicious-looking dog.

Now someone show this picture to 0 and wait for him to say “The NOTION that these people are sitting under a tree when they can turn up at one of my rallies and get a free job, a kitchen AND a bathroom, is indeed troubling.”

GOTCHA!!!
