This Cannot Be
Greek Antiquity | 496 B.C. to 406 B.C. | Sophocles

Posted on 10/01/2008 8:44:07 PM PDT by Jim Giatas

“All strangest things,

The multitudinous years bring forth and shadow from us all we know.

Falter alike great oath and steeled resolve.

And none shall say of aught, This cannot be.”

Sophocles 496 B.C. to 406 B.C.

I have always heard that quote translated thus:
Far-stretching, endless Time
Brings forth all hidden things,
And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

Rosemary: No! It can’t be! No!
Minnie: Go look at his hands.
Laura-Louise: And his feet.
Rosemary: (distraught) (She remembers her impregnation - conveyed through a super-imposed image of the devil’s yellow eyes that appears) Oh, God! (She drops her knife - it sticks point-first into the Castevets’ wooden floor.)
Roman: God is dead! Satan lives! The year is One, the year is One! God is dead! (A chorus of deafening ‘Hail, Satan!’ is heard) (Roman walks over to Rosemary) Why don’t you help us out, Rosemary? Be a real mother to Adrian. You don’t have to join if you don’t want to. Just be a mother to your baby. Minnie and Laura-Louise are too old. It’s not right. Think about it, Rosemary.
Rosemary: (crying) Oh, God!

Welcome to FR.

In Norse mythology the cat was closely associated with Freyja, the goddess of love, sex, attraction, and even crops. She was often called upon in matters of the heart. She is shown riding a chariot, driven by 2 large gray cats.

I started lurking in 1999 after quidam had stopped posting. I think I remember Michael Rivero posting for a short period of time after quidam. There were many posts in reference to quidam though. If I remember correctly he was our “deepthroat” in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Did he also keep us apprised of the Impeachment proceedings?

I started in 1998 during the impeachment but have changed my screen name once because I just felt like it after getting a new computer.

Yeah quidam seemed to have connections. It was fun to read his posts. But then one day he just vanished. Michael Rivero was a conspiracy theorist. Every time some one in politics died he thought it was a conspiracy. When JFK Jr.’s plane crashed he really went over the edge.

Those impeachment days were unforgettable here on FR. Lots of fun but maddening too. And when Bush was elected the first time and the close election with the hanging chad thing it was so great to share all that here.

I don't come here nearly as often as I used to. It's changed. More people here who are.... I don't know...extremely bitter about things. It was better back in the old days.

Oh yea, I remember Rivero now. I remember well the back and forth between him and others telling him he is nuts.

The hanging chad episode was nothing compared to what we will see in this next presidential election if it is as close. I also think more people are bitter because they are getting tired of the same old fights over the same old things and nothing ever gets resolved. The opposition is also becoming more abusive and it is frustrating many.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

[note that 0 is a Leo...a lion with with the head of a man]

Very good points!

I sort of wonder if maybe this place has been overrun by libertarians, or if conservatives here are getting more frustrated thus reactionary and so more libertarian.

How about a plug nickel for a clue???

What galactic cluster are we in?

Anyone willing to give a clue about what planet we’re on?

If and when . . . I find some stray and useful clues . . . I might respond more meaingfully.
