Avogadro’s number is a universal constant.
Truths/facts are universal rights, no matter the side.
Knowledge is the collection of those truths/facts.
Wisdom is the ability to use truth/facts, especially when not all are available, to make the correct decision in an unfamiliar situation.
I did not say This entire half of the country has no respect for wisdom.
I did say the left seems to consider wisdom a lesser priority, when compared to knowledge.
what is the universal right? When the tent gets too small we lose elections. Today is my first day posting after months of lurking. I fully expect to be called troll by the likes of you. My brain is on and ready to work and so is my flame proof suit :-)
I want to discover if what I have said is true or not; which is why I asked. (I acknowledge that opinion and truth are not equivalent, but it’s a start)
My purpose is not to be divisive, but to understand why a particular attribute is considered more important by us/them.
Or if it is incorrect to even suggest that one attribute SHOULD be considered more important.
Put that way, I agree.
If credentials were the only consideration, then Bush couldnt be an idiot since he graduated from Yale.
That's why I said that access to power is really the only thing that matters to the Left. Consistency, decency, facts, logic ... those are all irrelevant.
It might be noted that definitions used in science/engineering don’t work well in philosophy and political/sociological science.
Many shrewd insights given above ...
especially about credentialism.
But why the left seems to value knowledge, not wisdom;
perhaps schooling, not knowledge ...
whatever the exact terms of discourse ...
they value what they got, not what they ain’t got.
Ah- I think I misunderstood.
Universal right as in political affiliation? That I agree with.
If thats the case, my complete ad humble apologies.
I was under the impression you were indicating “ No universal right or wrong”
If, however, it is that you believe no universal right/wrong, then I think you may want to add your flame proff jacket as well ;-) - although as thats a belief and faith issue as much as a logical debate, I doubt that any amount of flaming would change either of our opinions.
I’m going to make a cup of coffee to speed up thought processes, and I’ll tie my feet to the floor so I dont fly off the handle again.....
May I suggest though that as users of the net, we come up with a better desciptive than lurking? Regardless of your character, the term “lurker” just never sounds good........
Actually the left prefers feelings and beliefs to knowledge.
The reason the left places knowledge over wisdom is because they have knowledge but lack wisdom. Wisdom is not within the grasp of liberals because they do not have the ability to process reality.
To the fool, he who speaks wisdom will sound foolish. ---Euripides
Well, see here....life starts with curiosity...followed by sorting facts from feelings....organizing facts into conclusions...resulting in knowledge....wisdom is the moral use of that knowledge.
Knowledge without wisdom is such a waste.
". . . If we cannot learn wisdom from experience, it is hard to say where it is to be found."
. . . . . George Washington to Bushrod Washington, November 10, 1787, "Letter Book" copy in the Washington Papers, Library of Congress, John C. Fitzpatrick, Editor.
Therefore, liberals do not value knowledge more than wisdom, they value what ever new rules of the game which will permit them to dominate it. They have no more regard for knowledge than they do for wisdom because all is grist for their mill.
Thank you. Here are additional quotes on the subject matter.
We have no words for speaking of wisdom to the stupid. He who understands the wise is wise already. G. C. Lichtenberg (174299), German physicist, philosopher.
Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life. Sandra Carey
It is the province of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen. Oliver Wendell Holmes
Wisdom is easy to carry but difficult to gather. Czech Proverb
You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. Naguib Mahfouz
Nothing doth more hurt in a state than that cunning men pass for wise. Francis Bacon
To acquire knowledge, one must study; but to acquire wisdom, one must observe. Marilyn vos Savant
Wise men speak when they have something to say. Fools speak when they have to say something. Plato
Wisdom is the first cousin to freedom"
From the movie, Cheers for Miss Bishop
Because wisdom requires the application of a value to persons, groups, actions, etc. and that is forbidden in liberalism. After valuation, a wise man chooses the correct course. To a liberal, most persons, groups, actions are "equal." None is better than any other. A Somali is equal to a Swede. A group of Congolese is equal to a group of Germans. Gay sex is equal to straight sex. One exception is that a liberal will condemn any person or group (e.g., conservatives) that applies values.
In short, a liberal cannot be wise because he never gets beyond the valuation stage.
Because if they ever attained wisdom they would no longer be leftists.
Isn't there?
Really great quotes - I’m adding them to my home page.
Thanks Moses;)
