Why does the left prioritize knowledge over wisdom?

Posted on 06/14/2008 7:15:38 AM PDT by RangerM

In my discussion with a "lefty" I came to the conclusion that he prioritizes knowledge ("He went to X University", "He's a Rhodes Scholar", etc) over wisdom.

I never hear anyone from the left suggest wisdom as the more valuable asset.

IMO, a wise man knows what he does not know. A learned man does not necessarily act wisely.

We never hear reference to the "knowledge of Solomon" or the "knowledge that comes with age"

What is it about the left that sees knowledge as primary, is it the "Knowledge is Power" cliche?

The left “prioritizes” symbols over reality.

One may be sure, that in any body of “knowledge”, at least 50% of the “facts” represented as being true, and beyond any point of successful refutation, will be proven to be dead wrong or outrightly harmful to the general well-being of humanity.

The ability to detect this fraudulent use of “science” is called “wisdom”.

“why does the left prioritize knowledge over wisdom.”

it’s more like hiding behind propaganda and backing it up with psychotic energy.

there is no wisdom in the left. there is nothing but arrogance, deceit and complicity which they consider to be “brilliance”, a pathology which knows no bounds of propriety, appropriateness or decency.

if dueling were once again legal, one wouldn’t see too many irresponsible leftist creatures playing psychotic games.

IMHO

If they were wise, they wouldn't be Leftists in the first place.

This is the scariest thing about the Left. They're not wise. And they're not wise enough to know it.

Some of the most unwise people I have known have had credentials that look good on paper. Some are like idiots savants, smart in some ways but not wise.

On the other hand, there are people who are highly intelligent--and very wise--and good and decent--and truthful-- Some people are blessed with everything. I married one of them.

This observation is usually phrased as "The Left values credentials and book learning, the Right perfers experience and performance."

One reason is that the state grants status and privilege on credentialed, often almost completely worthless credentials such as advanced degrees in education. The people granted these privileges tend to lean left in their political preferencs.

The huge expansion of the higher education rackets in the last couple of generations is almost entirely owing to the subsidies and incentives provided by government. Of course the beneficaries are going to prefer statist solutions.

I like to ask them why it is that the most powerful should not take from the most weak. Just like in nature.

Great Quotes:

He who knows others is learned; he who knows himself is wise. -Lao-Tze

Wise people, though all laws were abolished, would lead the same life. - Aristophanes

Many highly intelligent people are poor thinkers.
Many people of average intelligence are skilled thinkers. The power of the car is separate from the way the car is driven.

Because they are desperately searching for new knowledge that will overturn old wisdom - and if they can’t find it, they simply declare their new knowledge to have done so, anyway. ;)

Interesting, is this proposing a corollary between morality and wisdom?

When the left does not want to hear facts from opposing opinions, they are not prioritizing knowledge.

Global Warming: No opposing views allowed
Evolution: No opposing views allowed
Corporate Greed and the evils of capitalism: No opposing views allowed
Government-run schools: No opposing views allowed.
Open immigration: No opposing views allowed

It is not true that the left has a thrist for knowledge and just makes unwise decisions. They are totalitarian and will try to destroy all that does not tow the party line.

I'm not sure I'm on the same page with you.

By not allowing additional evidence (ie. knowledge), an unwise choice is made.

If I indicated it, I didn't mean to say the left "thirsts for knowledge". What I was getting at is that whenever someone with more knowledge is present, the left-minded person relents his ability to used his own abilty to think (use his wisdom).

It's as if to say, "you know more than me therefore, I won't consider whether or not what you are saying is the whole truth". This can even be when the less-knowledgeable person knows something to the contrary.

Back up a step. Your first sentence reveals that what they really prize is credentials (or apparent credentials) in order to hold positions of influence. Neither knowledge nor wisdom is important to them - only power.

Typing too fast and should have re-read closer. Here is what I meant to say:

There is no universal right, right? We all believe slightly different things...ditto the left. We need to move beyond demonizing if we are ever going to get anywhere...agree with them? NO, but to lump everyone that’s not part of your side together and then say something to effect as “This entire half of the country has no respect for wisdom” that is just silly. Political belief is a chinese menu of ideas, not binary choice.

They value things such as degrees and other academic achievements because they think it is the only means to signify intelligence. In actuality, in the present day, it only signifies being forced-fed an ideology....This is especially true with people in college for any of the arts. There are usually no right or wrong answers, so the professor’s ideology is what is taught - however illogical it is in many cases. Fortunately, in the business, sciences and medical professions, the colleges have to still hire successful people, so you still can learn actual constructive material in those areas.

What my examples were trying to show was (supposed) superior knowledge, with credentials being evidence of that.

If credentials were the only consideration, then Bush couldn’t be an ‘idiot’ since he graduated from Yale.

I do understand what you are getting at though.

Hmm.
Well, I suppose you would be right, if what you said were true.
No universal right? Huh? Oh wait, I get it.
Nice example of using “ knowledge VS wisdom” in exactly the way the thread poster was alluding to.
Thanks for the enlightenment.
Btw- Troll much?

I get what you’re saying...

But ultimately, they sure don’t know much, nor do they really make much of an effort to do so.

What liberals pursue is the appearances of knowledge instead of the real thing.

Which, I suppose, is very unwise.
