Hot dog vendor jailed for offering bacon (illegal bacon dog)

Amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles, there exists another world, an underground world of illicit trade in-not drugs or sex-but bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Street vendors may sell you an illegal bacon dog, but hardly anyone will talk about it, for fear of being hassled, shut down or worse. Our camera caught it on tape. One minute bacon dogs are sold in plain view, the next minute cops have confiscated carts, and ordered the dogs dumped into the trash.

Elizabeth Palacios is one of the few vendors willing to speak publicly. "Doing bacon is illegal," she explains. Problem is customers love bacon, and Palacios says she loses business if she doesn't give them the bacon they demand. "Bacon is a potentially hazardous food," says Terrence Powell of the LA County Health Department. Continue selling bacon dogs without county-approved equipment and you risk fines and jail time.

Palacios knows all about that. She spent 45 days in the slammer for selling bacon dogs, and with the lost time from work, fines, and attorney's fees, she fears she might lose the house that bacon dogs helped buy. She must provide for her family, but remains trapped between government regulations and consumer demand. Customers don't care about safety codes, says Palacios. "They just want the bacon."

In "Food Fight: Battle of the Bacon Dogs," reason.tv host Drew Carey takes a long look at the human cost of trying to prohibit trade in oh-so-tasty treats.

The hot dogs from the street vendor carts in LA are the best! They can take the bacon dogs when they can pry them from my cold, dead hands!

I just got my catering lic this week (NY)- vending permits here, only alow a vendor in NYS to serve hot dogs, preformed hamburgers (froz), pre cooked italian sausage, pre cooked chicken - thats it - no exceptions -no bacon !

I wanted to serve pulled pork bbq - its alowed under my catering permit, but not for vending - go figger.....even though Im certified to prepare in all 50 states

and I still need a temp food permit for festivals etc...

Oh yeah - and if you want to do a cart inside the city limits - plan on a lottery drawing for a spot ($600)

I’ve never heard of a bacon dog before, but I think I may be having some for dinner tonight with the family. Give me bacon or give me death! lol

Bacon-wrapped hot dogs? That sounds deliciously decadent. I'd like to try one.

This is yet another case for "get the government off our backs!"

I am glad that violent crime in LA is so under control that the police have nothing better to do than to hassle hot dog vendors who offer bacon with their hot dogs. /s

So is it also illegal to get a bacon cheese burger in LA? I’ll take a bacon cheese burger, hold the burger, hold the cheese, add a hotdog!

Ah the glamorous California life. Maybe you can eat bacon on ACLU day in San Diego. Why not mention the “no bacon”law in all those obnoxious ads begging people to move to CA?

Oh baby, now I know what I’m having for dinner tonight!

Seriously, if liberals spent 10% of their time using reason instead of emoting they could resolve this (and most nearly everything else!) to everyones benefit.

Liberalism is a mental disorder...

Just for the fun of it. These vendors are probably illegal and bring their third world health standards with them.

Watch the video. They are supposed to buy an expensive new cart with a three basin sink to have bacon. Meanwhile, the customers just go to the many unlicensed carts.

You have a ton of illegals undercutting legit sellers all over the US now... they run out of their car from company to company here locally.. No licience, no health inspections, no fair.

That lady can cry me a river.. the only thing she says that makes sense is the illegals are undercutting her with NO health permits whatsoever. If the city cracked down on those illegals selling, she would get more business and probable be able to upgrade to standards to sell the bacon dogs.
