Was the Last Decade of Movies THAT Bad?

Is this all a decade of movies is worth?

According to the American Film Institute's new list of the 100 greatest films, the last 10 years have produced only four great ones: "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), "Titanic" (No. 83) and "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89).

I get bloated just typing those titles. Granted, the last 10 years have been a historically weak period for films. They can't touch Hollywood's golden era of the '40s, or the heralded '70s, when maverick directors roamed the studios.

Ungh! TMI you walrus...

Here is a link to AFI's top 100 movies

So what's everyone think? I suspect that years of sub standard education, the dumbing down of society and the cultural depravity spread by Hollywood has left us with very few writers who can produce a coherent, compelling story, therefore, less interesting movies.

Sure, you have the occasional hit, but aside from the series of frenzied murder sprees in celluloid which enthusiastically embrace the legacy of the bloody Roman arenas you've really got only a few movies here and there which really make you want to go see them.

Today's movies either cover too much adult subject ammter or are simply mindless. Too many examples to consider IMHO.

I really do have a problem with the bloody murder movies. It worries me that the mass, graphics slaughter of men and women can serve as a form of entertainment. I know some people like it and consider it a "thrill" movie, but I wish people would reconsider what a "thrill" should be. Try a roller-coaster or something. ; )

"Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), "Titanic" (No. 83) and "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89).

I loved The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Saving Private Ryan was ok, Band of Brothers was way better though. The Sixth Sense was overrated.
Finally I come to Titanic. This was the most crappiest crapfest of a movie I've ever force myself to sit through. Kate Winslets magnificent rack couldn't save this fecesfest of a movie. I couldn't wait for the damn thing to sink so all the main characters would die. The best scene besides the ship sinking was that pretty boy sinking (whatever his name is). I cheered at that one. Really, this movie sucked in ways yet unimagined. So, to summarize, I didn't like Titanic. :-)

And the worst thing is you have to watch the whole damn movie to see it.

The best movie I’ve seen in years was “The World’s Fastest Indian”. Burt Munro must have been a pistol...

IMHO Cinderaella Man is one of the best movies ever. It should easily have won Best Picture for 2005. Instead Hollywood nominated a bunch of gay movies and and the winner, Crash, movies nobody saw or will remember.

I assume youre talking about hostel, and wolf creek and the lot? Its called murder porn, and its the most disgusting thing Ive seen in a while.

Someone figured out how to make snuff films and call them art.

the last 10 years

Patch Adams, 1998. Worst movie ever made. A hundred good ones can't pay the debt owed to society. Everyone associated with it should be papilloned to French Guiana.

If Titanic made the list, it must have been. I thought Sixth Sense was pretty good, the one critical scene was well done, and made the rest of the movie work.

I thought there were many great movies during the 90’s. I would have put Primal Fear up there instead of boring Sixth Sense. I did not care for the movie but the Passion should be up there. Titanic was a good pick (#1 film of all times in America and the World). Too many even to think of.

Agree. Add to that the proliferation of television through jillions of channels, the demand for scripts is so great that mediocre ones are snapped up.

Interestingly enough, I have a brother-in-law who worked for two of the major studios who advised me 20 years ago (when this proliferation was in its early stages) that I should write scripts, for that very reason. If I had taken his advice, I could probably be rich now, and never have had to produce one that even rates in the top 1,000.

I though Patch Adams was just a cheezy formula comedy, not really that terrible. For bad movies it's not even in the same league with the all-time champ, Ishtar.

That is a great description of a foul "art".

Now, the one movie I do like where there's a lot of killing is the 1984 remake of "The Thing" with Kurt Russel. That was an awesome, yet horrifying movie. Sci-Fi with suspense as "The Thing" could be anyone, anything or in a few cases...*shudder* "whatever". I just wouldn't watch it after a full meal.

But the other movies? I've stopped remembering all of the names that flash across the TV screen. They are akin to taking a handful of teenagers, tossing them in a blender and hitting "Frappe". At least that's the level of intellectual content.

Have you seen "Frequency" or "The Prestige"? Two very different movies that build up to interesting endings. The leaning towards darker subject matter. Good movies, though.

Now that was a compelling movie. I still remember when the movie ended. You could hear nothing but silence and the occasional sniffle. That was an experience.

I also thought Open Range was a dandy classic western. Enough to make me forgive Kevin Costner for Waterworld and The Postman.

I would also have toinclude Rounders in my own top 100 list.

I saw those two and liked them.

I cannot figure why people like to watch kids having their bodily organs burned off by blowtorches. I guess for these people, it’s like riding a roller coaster or something.

The only horror films I like are zombie movies..but that’s me.

"Titanic" is a masterpiece. It elevated movie-making to an entirely new level with its amazing realism and captivating story-telling.

It received the most "votes" of any movie in history - the kind of "votes" that count. It brought in more money in ticket sales and DVD's than any movie in history. A lot of people "voted" more than once. They kept spending their money to return to the theater to see the movie over and over again.

People can debate the quality of movies until the cows come home but there is no denying the popularity of something millions embrace by laying down their hard-earned money in piles never counted before in history.

I'm sure James Cameron cries when he reads someone trashing his fantastic movie....all the way to the bank.

To answer the question: Yes, of course it was that bad. I haven’t watched all of a single one of them. I think the last time I went to a theater was either for Jurassic Park or Back to the Future. Jurassic Park sucked. Back to the Future was great.

Oh, you say those weren’t in the past decade? Silly me.

How anyone can sit through those “Lord of the Rings” movies with all that stupid pig squealing and cries of “FRODO!!!!!” every 10 seconds is beyond me.

"Patch Adams, 1998. Worst movie ever made."

Sorry wrong answer!

This DR.T and the Women is hands down the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE!

I could watch Patch Adams a thousand times in a row and not break a sweat (and it was a bad movie) but I cringe if I even see a glimpse of Dr. T and the Women.

Trust me on this, don't SEE for yourself!
