TEXAS CITY Mary Lou Henry would have done anything for her seven cats, those who knew her say. On Thursday, her attempts to save them from a raging fire cost Henry, 77, everything.
Henry died after the fire erupted at her house in the 2000 block of 34th Avenue North about 8:40 a.m...

Sad, isn't it? :(
I went into a burning building once to rescue a tank of fish. I really did. Fish. In a tank of water with no pump. I did it too. It took two men to carry it back in and I weighed 110 pounds at the time. Sadly a kitten died in that fire, the only casualty. I didn't know she was in there. She wasn't my kitten but I wish I'd grabbed her instead. :-(
I'm sorry.
Very unlikely, unless the cat's fur was soaked with alcohol or gasoline when it knocked over the candle. Cats will generally scamper off quickly if they knock anything over. If the flame was starting to spread, the cat would definitely have run off. A candle flame comming in contact with a cat's fur will singe it (especially when it has a second or less of contact, because the cat is running off), not cat the fur on fire and spread to the rest of the fur. The badly burnt cat had probably tried to hide somewhere when the smoke and flames became intense, and got trapped.
I hope they went to heaven together....
aww....heartbreaking....
Some people will say she was absolutely crazy. But I understand. They were that important to her.
No one should ever underestimate the power of a fire. I know people who died in them, thinking there was less danger than there was. Very sad.
Sad that the woman who loved her cats died along with 3 of her 7 cats.
I used to have a beautiful 45 gallon fish tank. Wanna know what killed off all my fish? A FLOOD. I kid you not! :D
Well okay, it wasn't the water that did it (only about 6 inches) but the cold in the apartment since there wasn't any heat afterwords....
We've always had fish tanks. For some reason, my husband now has them in the basement, still with fish in them and I guess the fish are happy but not in a place where anyone ever sees them. It's his thing though so I don't say anything. I did use to give him a hard time about them because when the kids were little and we were going to have company, I would turn into the cleaning Nazi and the kids would scatter and he would go down and clean the fish tanks. We used to joke that they always reproduced at Christmas time but then realized that was when they got fresh water in their tanks. I've since learned to put a chicken hat on when I'm getting ready for company. Did you know you can't be angry or cranky or stressed while wearing a chicken hat?
"Two other cats were given oxygen by Texas City EMS crews and were being treated at a veterinary hospital. Family members were taking care of the fifth cat, while two remained missing, Patterson said."
I hope the live cats
have access to counseling for
their survivor guilt . . .
I'm PRETTY sure I would run into a burning house to save my dog, unless the house was COMPLETELY engulfed.
But then, if the fire didn't kill me, my grief would.
God bless this woman and her fur-babies. I'm sure she loved them dearly.
I witnessed a neighbor's house go up in flames and burn to the ground. What made the biggest impression on me was the SPEED in which it burned! It just kept gaining momentum. From the time we first saw smoke until it was fully engulfed was about 8 minutes.
