I guess I'm fascinated by waterfalls in volcanic terrain; here's another one with columnar basalt (Latourelle Falls, Columbia River Gorge):
And as a bonus, I hadn't realized that Paterson Falls, New Jersey, was such a high-volume fall (and it flows over basalt, too!). I'm going to have to go see this one in the spring.
TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Education; Outdoors; Science
KEYWORDS: basalt; newjersey; oregon; waterfall
Remind me; no waterfalls next week.

What's all that stuff on the rock in the lower right?Looks like water drops on the lens to me, maybe due to mist from the falls.

I've seen the Paterson Falls, New Jersey. It is really beautiful. However if you go into Paterson becareful as it isn't the safest place. At one time Paterson was known for its silk industry.By 1870, nearly fifty percent of the silk made in the United States was produced in Paterson. In the early part of the twentieth century, the silk mills of Paterson fell victim to labor strife and never recovered.

I drive by the Paterson falls everyday. It's beautiful.
I stopped there in the spring two years ago, when the river was at it highest level in decades. The falls were twice as impressive. All those outcroppings on the left were underwater. You could see the depth of the water as it rolled over the top of the falls. It was three feet deep as it fell.

Didn't someone in the Sopranos end up getting tossed over the falls or off the bridge? Or was it a jumper?
