That rumour from the other month is now confirmed, Angelina Jolie is set to star in the film adaptation of Ayn Rand's iconic tome "Atlas Shrugged" for Lionsgate reports Variety.
Jolie, a longtime fan of Rand's, was eager to play the role of Dagney Taggart, the most powerful female character in any of Rand's books.
A movie version of the Russian-born author's novel, which runs more than 1,100 pages, has been long in the making. For years, producer Al Ruddy tried to bring "Atlas Shrugged" to the bigscreen, attracting the interest of Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway along the way.
Howard and Karen Baldwin ("Ray") hold the rights to this most ambitious novel of Rand's, and are producing.
I realize Jolie is just an actress, and nice eye candy, but she's also basically a socialist. And when someone in the public eye chooses to lend their name to a cause or endorses a set of values, it colors the way the public recieves their work.
Finally, I believe that the core audiance for this film will be Rand's hardcore readers. They will probably be completly outraged. Somebody start the boycott clock.
An actor's job is to be someone they aren't. It's what they get paid for. Relax, eh?

I'm not sure if anyone has been cast, but Brad Pitt is listed on the IMDB as being in talks to play the part. Honestly, Pitt seems like he would be a good choice for the role. His Tyler Durder is one of the greatest characters in modern film, IMHO. The rest of the cast is still up in the air.
I don't know anything about her politics, but if she's really a Rand fan, she's not a socialist. She at least comes off as a good personality fit with Dagney.
Liberals have a funny way they interpret things. Who can read the First Amendment and think that it protects the right to expose oneself in public but does not protect someone from saying a prayer in public?

I would be more concerned with who writes the screenplay than with who does the acting.

I like to mock Brad Pitt as much as the next guy, but I have to admit, he isn't scared to look and act nasty in pursuit of acting excellence.
His "12 Monkeys" character was electrifying. Tyler Durden was magnificent.
He may very well be the John Lithgow of the younger set - such a chameleon, you forget you're watching Brad Pitt.
That was such a visually odd movie! Almost plastic-looking.
A bit of perspective here.
