Pit bulls on the loose went on a rampage Thursday and terrorized a southwest Philadelphia neighborhood. The dogs escaped from their backyard at 53rd Street and Cedar Avenue and ran several blocks through the neighborhood, attacking several people. Their rampage ended with a policeman shooting one of the dogs.

I was saying that liberals might try making us get insurance to have a gun. Just to make it harder. I know I probobly couldn't afford it that easy being a college kid.
I can't legally own a gun although other people in my state can. I do not want the responsibility of any big dog as they are expensive and too much trouble. So the best I can do is either get a cattle prod when I go out or carry some kind of dagger, or improvised weapon, neither of which I want to do. I didn't used to have to worry about it. And I'm not just worried about myself.
Seems to be a bit of pitbull terrier hysteria on this thread. My little cutie lived to be nearly a decade old and she was convinced she was a lapdog. She was athletic, strong, and provided my family lots of laughs with her antics. It's all about the environment in which they're raised.

No thanks. There are plenty of dogs out there (I have three) whose presence in the house doesn't require that I have a .45 to protect against a sudden rampage.
I would never have a pit, or even a pit mix. My wife was nearly mauled by a young pit male two years ago while walking my dogs. I'm sure had a passerby not restrained the dog, he would have killed my three dogs and hurt my wife.
I have no use for your choice of animal, and I'm beginning to not have much use for people who own pits either.
Well- if your gun has a procilvity to exit your property without assistance, and go terrorize/victimize/kill your neighbors all on it's own (as in without human assistance), then yes, maybe you need liability insurance to own guns....
But as I have never had one of my guns let itself out of the house to run loose in the neighborhood threatening folks....
I guess that one thing you could do is work for other honest people in your state to be able carry. Retired cops, former military people. That way perhaps you may have someone else around who is armed.
Good luck. A knife is much harder to use effectively than a gun. Perhaps if you are old (like me) you could get used to carrying a cane?

I'm on your side dude. its just that one way anti-gun people might try and take our guns away might be this way. With insurance thats too expensive for anyone to afford.

I don't know any retired cops or anybody like that and they aren't going to want to hang out with me.
Some suggestions have been ammonia, carry dog treats, the cattle prod (what if the battery goes?), pepper spray (police grade doesn't work sometimes and I could be downwind if I had to use it and get myself instead), and prayer. If I could carry, I'd want two in case one jammed. But I can't. So I don't venture far from my home or car any more, but I still chance it once in awhile. You can't quit living just because some people can't or won't control their dogs and think their dog would never, ever get loose or hurt anyone. Sometimes people deliberately let them out of their fenced-in yards. That happened to my neighbor with his Chocolate Lab. There was no other indication how that dog got loose. If it weren't my neighbor's dog and I made friends with it, I'd be afraid of it, too. I get bruises on my hands when it playfully nips me and it has too much energy. If it jumped on me, it would knock me down. But that's the only big dog I'm not afraid of now.
Actually, I have two cats now, just remember little Janus as a wonderful friend.
With so many other wonderful breeds of dog available, why have a pitbull in the house as a pet? It makes no sense at all. I have had dogs all my life, and I love them. I now have three little dogs. I always walk them on a leash when we are out of my fenced yard. Why should I fear for my safety and for that of my TRULY SWEET little dogs when we obey the laws and are no danger to anybody? Why?
One day, Mr. Adler and I were walking in our small neighborhood. One of our neighbors was showing some others a new puppy he had. It looked just like a pitbull; the face and jaws are so characteristic. He called it some kind of bull terrior; I don't remember what (he did not say AmStaff which I believe is the only "legal" and fairly trustworthy form of the breed). We were worried, but evidently he did not keep the dog since we never saw it again. Thank goodness! How could I have walked my little, harmless dogs past his house with confidence that the pitbull was safely inside? As I said, our neighborhood is small; the pitbull house would have significantly limited the area in which I would have felt safe walking my little, defenseless dogs.
Let me ask this one more time: with so many fine breeds of dog to choose from, WHY choose a pitbull? Simply choose another breed!

The reason I chose my cute pitbull terrier is because she was so friendly to me when I found her at the pound. Everyone else passed her by because she was over a year old and they foolishly bought into this silly myth about the breed.
My pet had a stunning brindle coat and was loved by everyone. My parents would occasionally "dogsit" if I had to travel for business and all their friends were charmed by my pitbull. One woman stayed at their house alone with the dog for a week when I took them on vacations for three consecutive years. My dog knew all the basic tricks plus a few of her own. My parents' elderly friend commented on how the dog loved to curl up with her on the couch to watch television!
Don't be duped by the leftist media into painting all pitbulls with the same broad brush.

My brother had a pit bull that was the sweetest dog in the world BECAUSE she knew who was boss. When she had puppies, my brother trained them ALL, and they were as sweet as their mother. One of her puppies, a cutie named Buster Brown was stolen from another brother's back yard and was gone for almost a year. He reappeared one day, beaten and starved. They surmised that someone had stolen him to be used as a participant in dog fights for gambling purposes, but he apparently didn't cooperate because he didn't know from fighting,and the folks who took him tried to make him mean by beating him. He was home for six months, still as sweet as ever until he was stolen again. That time, he never returned.
I have a picture of our #2 son, when he was 3, wrapped in a blanket, collapsed on an exhausted Buster Brown after an afternoon of the two of them running and playing.
Don't paint all pit bulls with the same brush. ANY dog can be taught to be mean. One of the absolute most nasty dogs I ever knew was a chihuahua. Couldn't stand that yappy, ankle biting little brute!
chihuahuas can't kill or maim someone. if one bites my ankle, I can kick it.
