Pit bulls on the loose went on a rampage Thursday and terrorized a southwest Philadelphia neighborhood. The dogs escaped from their backyard at 53rd Street and Cedar Avenue and ran several blocks through the neighborhood, attacking several people. Their rampage ended with a policeman shooting one of the dogs.

I didn't notice the article mention how many dogs.
Also unusual to have the owner so readily agree to have them euthanized.
There was a poll with the article. A lot more people think people should be allowed to own pit bulls than not so far.

Sounds like the owner probably has very little idea about anything. She is definitely part of the problem but so are the dogs. I'll probably get flamed but there are just too many of these events taking place with Pitbulls.
The Pit Bull activists most likely "Freeped it". They are quite organized as there is a lot of money at stake continuing the breeding these dogs.
They'll be along shortly to tell us this was uncharacteristic of the breed.
What about the cheese steaks? Are they okay? Bad dog!
These stories are actually pretty rare. We generally only hear of them daily because there's a group of people who discriminate and don't post similar stories about beagles, poodles and chocolate labs.
Plus they are status symbols and weapons among the drug community.
ANY Pit Bull found in my yard is sumarily dealt with using an effective combination of smokeless powder and lead. The lead may, or may not, be jacketed.....
It is uncharacteristic of the breed when raised in a very loving home. Pits can be extremely nice dogs. However, even with those raised in a loving home, they can get pretty aggressive. We adopted a Pit/Lab mix, and even with the lab in him to "water him down", I will sometimes have to just pick him up and pin him on his back when he is getting to aggressive.
Pure pits are even worse than this, and if they're not raised in an absolutely loving home, I'd hate to think what those jaws can do.
They are inherenently loving dogs, but they're also inherenetly aggressive and inherently dangerous. You get an owner who doesn't give them enough attention (an inevitable event) and you get what we have here.
My personal opinion - this being a "free country" and all (snicker, snicker) is that people should be allowed to own pit bulls. But they should be held 100% accountable if (when) those dogs do damage.
If my child were hurt or killed by someone's dog (not just pits), not only do I plan on making sure the dog can never hurt anyone again, but the owner isn't going to be too fond of me either. The owner should be held on Assault charges, or murder charges if the attack results in death.
Any and all financial loss should come out of the owner's pocked, bank, or assets.
In fact, I wouldn't have a problem with a requirement to have liability insurance specifically for owning these "dangerous" breeds.
Then the question becomes, will I have to have liability insurance to own and operate a gun.

I have s pair of locking pliers. The jaws look just like a pit bull's jaws.

They should be go after the breeders who sell a defective/dangerous product. Get some of the blood money back.
